What's the cause of the crime deduction in New York ?
Strict laws or gentrification ??
For a city of 8 million to pump 200+ murders is amazing and should be the blue print for cities like Chicago and Detroit
Both, I would think.
If Chicago had NYC's current murder rate(2.6/100k), then the city would have just 71 murders for a city of 2.705 million. Detroit would have just 17 or 18 for a city of 673k. You have to go all the way back to great-fire era Chicago since when the city's murder rate was that low. But it's murder rate is currently 8 times that of NYC. Pretty ridiculous, though not St. Louis bad.

I believe Baltimore and St Louis have the highest murder rates in the country.
295 is not for Philly, but for Baltimore(now has surpassed the 300th mark)

Houston has 176? That is really good, we need to hover around 200 or less a year, instead of going to the 300 a year range. Hopefully as it gets colder it drops off even more and we squeeze in under 200 like 2012.

I’m a NYer and I can’t even believe it tbh...
I don’t have an exact answer for this, but I’m sure it has much more to do with just gentrification. Although gentrification may have helped lower the murder rate in some areas, gentrification is only really happening in a few areas mainly in Upper Manhattan and Northern + Western Brooklyn, while we’re seeing everywhere all over all 5 boroughs have these dramatic declines in crime.

Adding to that, the share of white people in NYC did not go up during the period, so the actual crime rates are dropping across the board with all demographics.
I believe nowadays some NYC projects actually have similar crime rates as middle class suburbs.
Austin Texas is super safe for a large city, Memphis on the other hand not so much. How is Nashville doing lately?
Austin isn’t surprising given that it’s land size is bigger than that of NYC by 11.2 square miles with 966,000 people. So, some areas of the city is more in line with first and second ring suburbia, if not third ring/exurban areas, in similar metros in other regions.
Chicago is at 587 murders as of November 6th compared to 665 last year, or a decline of 12%.
