While Chicago may have great suburbs, it also has Gary, which is basically a suburb at this point with employment. I cannot think of a single suburb nearly as badly off in the DFW area as Gary. The rest of Northwest Indiana isn't exactly a gem either, if I remember correctly.
These look great. Next time I'm in Philly, I'll have to venture out the city a bit.
Absolutely. The cool thing is that so many of these suburbs are connected by rail. And the stations are literally like old railroad stations. Here are a couple examples:
I take weekend day trips to different parts of the metro on Regional Rail just to get out of the city, see a movie, walk around, grab a bite to eat. This is a good read: http://www.flyingkitemedia.com/featu...own060514.aspx
I think Montgomery County, PA is a pretty good deal - particularly for working class families.
Montgomery County is like PA's Fairfield County, but with more affordable real estate.
I wouldn't consider Montgomery County working class though, definitely among the wealthier counties in the nation.
It's demographics are not those of a working class county, though.
I think the median household income is around $61,000 and the population is 80% white. Typically, that would be considered working class (or a lot more favorable for the working class) in major east coast metro areas.
In any case, you get a lot for the money there in my opinion.

It's closer to $76k, but it's not a huge change to what you're saying. I think there are very high income areas of Montco, and there are more rural, further away towns that drag those numbers down. But others would know more than I.
