Yeah for sure. I agree.

Old Town, Chevy Chase, Bethesda are all super charming.

My dad has become a New England "charm" fanatic - because he wasn't originally from here and because he now has a large familiarity complex/bias.

But one place he drools over is OT Alexandria. "We should have lived here at some point" are words that came out of his mouth. And it's not like NoVa doesn't have other charming downtowns and exurbs (Looking at you, Leesburg).

Fun fact- We were heavily considering a move to NoVa in the spring, but the job fell through. Ultimately ended up (back) in a rather vanilla Chicago suburb. Funny that I'm sitting here advocating for Northeast charm and inner ring density, while I now/again live in fairly non distinct suburb of Chicago.

For the record, since this thread has evolved into suburbs with charm/urbanism, there's another DC suburb that I don't believe has been mentioned but was always my favorite (outside of Old Town) when I lived in the area: Takoma Park, MD.

Very "chill" and "neighborhoody" vibe and far less rat-racey compared to the vast majority of DC suburbs, especially considering it's right outside of the District. Nice, decent-sized walkable downtown area, adorable bungalow neighborhoods, and a Metro stop right in-town.

Here's a few street views:

Maryland isn’t the north, so it’s the south
