Seriously man, is your sense of personal value and worth THAT wrapped up in where you live? It's so weird how you actually believe yourself to be an inherently superior type of Black compared to other Black folks, but none more than Black Atlantans for whom you reserve your most biting criticisms. You sound like Larry Elder on The Breakfast Club.
I’m curious about something. Have you ever said in your personal life “I don’t want to go to that venue because I feel the people that go there aren’t your crowd” when referring to an establishment or event? That could mean they’re ratchet, ghetto, or somewhere in between. Maybe you think it’s dangerous.

It’s a relevant question for all the people in this thread. It’s something I hear all the time from people in every city, but somehow, you’ve tried to create a narrative where that doesn’t exist. The narrative you’re trying to create is a lie!

It’s ok to be critical or disagree with someone’s lifestyle even if it’s your culture

Remember they just had an all-black reality TV show on the Vineyard this year as well.

Summer House Vineyard was 100% black. Sumner House Hamptons was 80% white with 2 blacks. I do think it’s left those two in the rearview as far as notoriety. Being from MA- I have people ask me about the vineyard often.

" If youre melanated Marthas Vineyard is THE place to vacation in the summer"

To be honest multiple of my friend- all a part of "The Vineyard Legacy" were approached and they all turned it down.

The Island doesn't like the depiction because 1) its shallow and vapid and 2) none of the people in the show grew up going to the island. No New Englanders participated in this show because they didn't want this to interfere with their ability to 'get away'- all of them are from NY or CA. I also don't think they stay in Oak Bluffs despite socializing there and mentioning it. Honestly? I boycotted the show, I'm in the Vineyard Legacy group chat.. and felt it was way to bougie and unrealistic. Not a real depiction of Black Vineyard Life. However, I was informed it was picked up for a 2nd season.

Summer House Filming Draws Concerns in Oak Bluffs

Producers of Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard, a Bravo reality television series that premiered earlier this year, received Oak Bluffs select board approval Tuesday to start filming scenes for its second season later this week.

The decision was met with resistance from town residents who disapproved of the show’s content and representation of the Vineyard.

To celebrate Oak Bluffs’ rich history as an African American vacation spot, the show’s first season followed 12 Black men and women on a 15-day trip at a luxurious rental home. Between scenes of relationship drama and risqué parties were clips of glistening Vineyard waters, bustling down-Island streets and Island wildlife.

When line producer Angel Johnson requested permission to film new scenic shots for season two, people at the Oak Bluffs select board meeting Tuesday questioned whether the select board should condone the show’s production at all.

“This program is a horrible reflection of Martha’s Vineyard and Oak Bluffs,” said Oak Bluffs resident Thelma Baxter.

...

After Ms. Johnson promised to provide the board with additional details about the times and locations of filming, she received its unanimous support.
Interesting, as there was a short series called The Black Hamptons last year, based upon Sag Harbor/the Hamptons: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Hamptons

Another thing to add about the Hamptons, it does have a year round black population, which varies in terms of income, but is still generally middle class and up. Other places like Bridgehampton, Southampton, East Hampton, the Westhampton Beach area, etc. are some of the places that you'll find those residents.

Not to get stuck in that area or the NE, but Idlewild MI near Baldwin, a small town in West/NW Michigan that is about 30% black, was/is another such resort community:

It could be a bigger draw for people in Detroit and Chicago, as well as other Midwestern areas.

Just a side note and I know you are further left than me, but come on Mutiny! Lol even though I think Elder is a bit robotic and not as intellectually nuanced as more thorough conservatives Tom Sowell or Glenn Loury. The gist of what he is saying is true. And he’s more intellectual than those on the Club
Agree to disagree. I have no interest in defending that c$*n.

Yea I had Idlewild in mind o- Idlewild i'm pretty sure for all pracical intents and purposes is dead Certainly not on the level of Oak Bluffs.

I've been to the vineyard maybe a dozen times. There many many people from NY and Long Island in particular, all in my childhood summer in August I'd hear them tout the Vineyard as a one-of one. While they may live in the Hamptons I really do not think Sag or the Hamptons comes close to the prestige or appeal fo the Vineyard apart from the Diddy All White Party (does that still happen out there?)

Have you ever been out the the Vineyard? Seems like your scene.

Yes, about 20+ years ago. Took the ferry from Hyannis and did a little tour via bus around the island, but didn't really stay too long. I do want to go back though.

I'm not sure about the All White Party, but I think someone else hosts it. I could be wrong though.

I first went out there in 1998. Last time back was 2014. A lot seems to have changed out there. One of my friend I grew up with shes a part-time realtor out there. She often house sits in the homes of her former clientele. She spends the whole summer out there. Shes a Spelman alumn and she often is staying in pretty extravagant mansions in MV owned by Spelman and Morehouse alumni. Many of the Divine nine ofr regional alumni chapters of HBCUs have their summer meet ups in Marthas vineyard.

"A Beautiful Resistance" celebrates Black joy and Black lives. Oak Bluffs is the part of Martha's Vineyard where white locals sold freed slaves land in the 18th century. Here, Black folk cultivated their own beach town, a place of black affluence and summer joy. A place where the water is ours. Mercy Bell grew up catching the ferry from Boston to the Vineyard to visit her brother. Now, they own a home together, their first property, their first permanent address, and a step toward family legacy no one can be evicted from

Uh, I stated flashier and showier than Atlanta (which DC is) and probably more a NE Culture vs a Southern Culture in general. Also lived in DC, MD and NoVA.

And oh, the Inkwell, a few memories and interesting playground for Black folk.
