Whatever the case may be, I just think Chicago is, in a lot of ways, at the intersection of many different cultures in the U.S. It is northern, without any ounce of real southern culture.
But, it's maintained it's African American/southern migratory roots going back generations, certainly more than most Northern cities.
If you were to ask me, which city is more northern- Chicago or Philadelphia? I'd say it's a tie, and stop asking dumb questions. But if you ask me which has more southern INFLUENCE active in 2020, I'd say Chicago.
That seems to be the census. One particular continues to say otherwise. I'm willing to bet Chicago receives more southern transplants than Philadelphia , because as of now, I've yet to meet anyone from the DMV and Baltimore that moved to Philly. Aside from employment and financial issues, people move to places where they feel more "at home".
I'll take the words of food reviewers over yours. Seems to me you hold some ill-will towards the South. I wish Philadelphia retained more southern tradition, the city is near irrelevant in Blues, Jazz, BBQ, and has an average soul food scene compared to Chicago despite being a hour and a half away from the South.

Living in Chicago, gives one a much better perspective, than reading about a few restaurants that serve barbecued food. Please don't think you are the "expert" because you found a couple restaurants that serve good barbecued food. As I posted earlier, Philly has those restaurants, as well. Every major city in the USA serves barbecued food, somewhere within their city limits.
Here's a list with NYC on it. Oh, and Hawaii. Both, southern, I guess.

The food reviewers say otherwise, at least compared to Philadelphia, which is the point of this thread.
I think Chicagoans should just say thank you for seeing their BBQ scene is a well known and top quality foodie aspect of their city.
I think I posted a link previously here from the City BBQ Culinary scene about itself ....
Well as far as TripAdvisor goes .... where people heading to these 2 cities as tourist can find recommendations by other visitors.... BOTH Chicago and Philadelphia have 30 BBQ restaurants listed.
Chicago clearly has the vast majority of votes for being more Southern and still --- most claim by its African-Americans and on ACCENT/DIALECTS of their BLACCENT. These other side points really are trivial.

No they don’t. As others have already called you out. Providence, Rhode Island was ranked higher than Chicago for BBQ on one of your fake lists you linked. And NYC and California were on one of the lists you linked. I guess NYC and cities in California are more southern influenced than Philly too.....
ANOTHER FAIL
If you haven’t been able to deduce yet....BBQ rankings have nothing to do with being southern influenced, genius!

Chicago has a place at the "BBQ" table, but it isn't necessarily huge.
I would much rather turn to "soul food" as an example of Chicago's cuisine being influenced by the south. There are tons of them all around the city and metro area.
I fully agree Chicago is more southern influenced than Philadelphia. Mainly because of prominence in blues, soul food, black accents, and overall, it was a later developed city than Philly, so it has more recent transplants from the south (black AND white).
