I don't understand a "none" answer. If there are second tier cities in the south (are there?) and some of them are better than others (are some better than others?), then it's hard to fathom that there is a such answer as "none." Does that mean that there are no 2nd tier cities in the south or does it mean that there are second tier cities but they are all perfectly equal to each other so that none is better than others?
Because some people just can't keep their lips zipped, even if it means it contributes NOTHING to the thread. They only succeed in embarrassing themselves.
I'm suprised to see so many say Austin and San Antonio. I love both cities but think of San Antonio as a SW city and Austin... well really defies a label. Do most people here consider Austin to be southern?
Austin has more of a southern feel than southwestern. In general, the south is lush and the southwest is desert. Austin is lush.
Eh. You'd be hard press to find people in Austin say they are Southern. More than likely, today's Austin will say they are Southwestern or Texan. Austin also is lush but compared to the Southeast, it isn't that lush. The trees can be short and scrubby and can go weeks if not months in the Summertime w/o a drop of rain.

I was moreso talking about the feel of the city than the philosophy of the residents. And of course someone in Austin would say they are Texan since they live in the state of Texas.

but, unfortunately for those who want to move austin to the north or to the west, it remains in the south, in texas. the trouble w/ cities is they are difficult to pack up physically and geographically. trying to pick up about 725,000+ people is very much like gathering bumble bees in one's hand. consequently, to all who so desperately want to validate austin, houston, dallas-fort worth, atlanta, charlotte, miami, and dc---only if they appear in these individuals' dreamstates---i say to them, these cities are established in their identies in their respective locations in the south. most of us down here love and care about these gals. they clean up pretty well, and we will keep 'em down here w/out apology, thank you.
not to belabor the point, however, if you are in any city other than the tier one cities named, get in a car, boat, train, or plane and make a trek to any of the teir one destinations. carefully note how you feel when you arrive in their downtowns. remember what you see, and compare it to the city or cities that you left. again, regional pride as compared to that of a world view. it is a big, big, world, and the cities in the state of south carolina, the city of nashville, tn, and the city of austin, tx are not, in the context of a world view, in the running.

When I fly out of Charlotte Douglas International Airport (8th busiest airport in the Nation and Top 30 busiest in the World) to one of those tier 1 Southern cities, their downtowns better have tons more going on than the above videos. TONS MORE!!!
