Lots of movie stars and people in the music industry live in Marin Country...which is just north of SF. Sean Penn, Santana, Robin Williams, George Lucas's company is in Marin, Nick Cage, Sharon Stone, Benjamin Bratt, Barry Bonds, Joe Montana (he just moved to LA), Francis Ford Coppola and probably more I don't know about.
I think the Bay Area is a nice hide out for many stars. Not as hetic as LA but they are still close. Hope on a plane from the Bay and you can be in LA in 45 min

Now that you mention it, In my neighborhood there are pro atheletes, rock stars, a lady who has a huge financial advice show on cable news, dancers, opera singers, nobel laureates, famous authors, business tycoons etc.
For black stars I would day Atlanta, like I saw movie producer John Singleton, and rapper Ludacris in Whiskey Park at the W Hotel in Buckhead just last Friday. Saw Kim Kardashian with some tall @ss dude (guessing her was a basketball player) getting into a car at the valet at Lenox Square about 2 weeks ago.
I didn't notice the date of this post and thread at first but so much has changed since 2009. Atlanta is considered the new Hollywood with so many movies and TV series being filmed here. I once saw Jennifer Gardner passing in front of the Fox Theater.
Las Vegas is second to LA when it comes to celebrity centric and it's not even close, they don't call it the entertainment capital of the world for nothing. New York is more about fashion than anything else, there's a reason Emma Chamberlain prefers New York to Los Angeles lol
