Texas I can see because it has southwestern influence on the western side. Florida has Latin American influence.
Understandable, but I could see how someone from say, Tyler (Texas) or Tallahassee (Florida) hackles would rise if they weren't thought of as "Southern". OTOH, I could picture someone from Miami or El Paso who wouldn't even give it the time of day to think if they were Southern.
I'm not arguing with you. You said VA wasn't the south and I was telling you it was just like everyone else was telling you. Also, you the one being pointless saying that VA isn't the north or the south but the east coast.
I'm not upset. I actually am getting a thrill out of this b/c you're shame to say VA is the south.
Richmond (as well as the majority of the rest of the state of Virginia) should not be questioned on where it's at. Somebody brought up the Clipse earlier, I think. They rep the 757 but they aren't originally from there. Timbaland, Magoo, and Missy never repped the Northeast either. I did hear Timbaland scream South a couple times though.
I brought up those rappers. And I never said they were part of the Northeast, I just wanted someone to tell me that they actually thought they were southern artists.

Look, if you ask the average North Carolinian where VA is at, they will more than likely say South. Same with South Carolinians, Georgians, and Eastern Tennesseans. The only part of VA that is like the Northeast is NOVA.
What about people from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas? Our votes don't count?
What is your definition of southern? When I think of southern-style cities I think of Richmond, Charleston, Nashville and Savannah because they seem more like the old south. Cities such as Atlanta, and Charlotte are changing because because of people from the outside moving in.
Nashville doesn't fit in with the "old South" cities like Savannah and Charleston. It fits in much better with "New South" cities like Atlanta and Charlotte.

Nashville is getting there but it's still behind Charlotte and Atlanta. It's not about to lose it's country music capital title anytime soon. I see what you mean though.
And people from PA and NY would probably beg to differ about NoVA. LOL.
My relatives in Maryland are the quickest ones to deny that Maryland is a "southern" state (and to me, whether Maryland is Southern is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more debatable than whether or not VA is southern).
But what can I say? Perception is reality. Just as there are people who don't consider Virginia the South, there are just as many who don't consider Florida or Texas as the South.
But then again, it goes to show people that The South isn't as monolithic as some people believe it to be.
I don't want this to become a "which is more southern" discussion about Texas and Virginia, but I will say that the difference between the two is that Texas actually touches the Deep South. Virginia does not. TX is all the way at the bottom. Not to mention it was the last state to free its slaves.
The deep South is not the only region of the South, nor should it ever set the standard for what "true Southernness" should be. There have always been variations within the South.

I only said those areas because they are closest to Virginia and many in those states do not consider Texas the South. Hell, there are some people in Bama that do not consider Texas a Southern state.

True. On your other comment though, you could walk around in PG County Maryland and you would think you are in the deep south. The feel is there but once you interact with the people, you figure out you're not in the South anymore. But yeah, if people from the Northeast have a hard time equating DC and Maryland as the Northeast, they will have an even harder time with Virginia.
