whoops, thought I had responded to this last night. anyway, you might be right, the article I read might have been wrong, it stated 2003 but then again it was only one article, leaving through it is more trustworthy

According to these MSA GDP figures and CSA population figures that is $974.493 Billion in GDP and 24.1 million people. I did an extremely rough estimate on the amount of land covered that is 153,832 square miles. That is roughly the size of Bangladesh. The core cities of PAM are in bold.
Here are the MSAs in alphabetical order:
Anderson,SC, Anniston,AL, Asheville,NC, Athens,GA, Atlanta, Auburn,AL, Augusta,GA, Birmingham, Burlington,NC, Charleston, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Cleveland,TN, Columbia, Columbus,GA, Dalton,GA, Decatur,AL, Durham, Fayetteville,NC, Florence,SC, Gainesville,GA, Goldsboro,NC, Greensboro, Greenville,NC, Greenville,SC, Hickory,NC, Huntsville,AL, Jacksonville,NC, Johnson City, TN/VA, Kingsport,TN/VA, Knoxville, Macon, Montgomerey, Morristown,TN, Myrtle Beach, Raleigh, Rocky Mount,NC, Rome,GA, Spartanburg,SC, Sumter,SC, Tuscaloosa,AL, Warner Robins,GA, Wilmington,NC, and Winston-Salem,NC.
Just wondering.....

What makes places like Gainesville, GA....Burlington, NC and Anderson, SC any more "core" than larger MSAs like Montgomery, AL....Macon, GA or Columbus, GA....or to an even greater extent Augusta, GA.....Huntsville, AL.....Knoxville, TN.......Columbia, SC...Charleston, SC...????

Gainesville, GA and Burlington, NC have a leg up on places like Huntsville and Knoxville...?

Why is somewhere like Charleston listed in the region but not Savannah?? Wouldn't the Piedmont only be cities within the area as shown below anyway? Sorry just confused.

You raise a good question. Gainesville,GA and Burlington,NC aren't heads and shoulders above Knoxville or Huntsville. They're only core cities because of their location along the I-85 corridor, of which makes up the PAM core metros. Burlington is the smallest metro in the Piedmont Triad CSA. This CSA is Greensboro-Winston-Salem-Burlington MSAs. Anderson is the smallest MSA in the Upstate,SC CSA. This CSA is Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson MSAs. Gainesville is apart of Atlanta's CSA. Savannah is too far South to be apart of Charlanta. Charleston is included because of the connectiveness of the Carolina metros. I posted a link that showed a satellite imagery of the region by light emission. That should illustrate what I'm saying.

This map is somewhat out of date. Houston and Dallas MSAs are listed in the 3-5 million range but, now, they've both reached 6+ million.

Default Texas Triangle vs Piedmont Triangle

This should be a more fair thread.

I am taking out Alabama altogether basically to include a better triangle, and possibly a healthier and larger economy.

The major cities in the Texas Triangle are Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. Additional MSAs in the region include College Station-Bryan, Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood, Galveston and Waco.
Most people are familiar with the Texas Triangle. But there is another epicenter in the south. It is also a Triangle but upside down. It encompasses around 820 mile perimeter.

It runs from Atlanta on 75/24 to Nashville, over on 40 to Raleigh/Durham, and back down on highway 85 to Atlanta.
It includes Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston Salem.
It encompasses around a 1020 mile perimeter. Slightly larger, but that is a lot to do with travelling through mountains.

Who has strongest economy?
Best Shopping?
Best Nightlife?
Best Restaurants?
Most Successful?
Best Nature?
Best QOL?
Best COL?
Best sports?
Best Education?
Best weather?
Best history?
Most important?
Better place in the future?
Where would you rather live?

I always forget how CHEAP it is in Texas, how the heck is it still so cheap there? I also think that the PT has serious educational clout, Georgia Tech, Emory, Vanderbilt, UTenn, Wake Forest, Davidson, Duke, UNC, NC State, Morehouse, Spelman. I also think Asheville combined with Raleigh can put up a *bit* of liberal fight against Austin, but Austin still wins for that.

But what if you wanted a condo or something near downtown Houston would that still run you high end, and balance it out with cheaper areas outside?
