PT-New Orleans also has streetcars.
Art galleries is probably a wash, no way Atlanta wins decisively.
Parks doesn't go to Atlanta so decisively either.
You don't have to be single to enjoy life in New Orleans, how stereotypical.
Atlanta has heavy rail and light rail. That beats New Orleans streetcars any day.
Atlanta is famous for being a art center in the south.
Im not being sterotypical either. Yes there are good areas in New Orleans for a family but Atlanta has more jobs and better schools (metro wise).

New Orleans has the edge on history it's one of the most unique places in the country. But it's very conservative I remember on the news folks were worry after Katrina Latino workers rebuilding New Orleans would change the culture. New Orleans is known for it's culture I have seen Louisiana poster boast that new Orleans is like it's own little world. Well the saying you can't have your own cake and eat it, Atlanta is definitely more cosmopolitan.

Some LA posters are upset that New Orleans is being projected with a lower QOL and only good if your single. Well hell Atlanta is being projected as having no soul, over conservative and only good for a family. But hay ignorance is bliss.
I don’t really think there is that much of a difference between metro New Orleans and metro Atlanta when it comes to being conservative. Plus that Latino thing does not mean much, it was pretty exaggerated by the media because I think the Latino population only increased from about 70,000 in 2005 to 90,000 2010. If anything Latino culture is apart of New Orleans culture.

This is a gut reaction, so bear with me, but my opinion is if you have to ask, stay in/go to Atlanta.

There are only two cities in the US in which I felt immediately and irreversibly unhappy and they were Atlanta and Chicago. Now, I know that lots of people boost/love both but for me, there is no contest. New Orleans is a place that draws you to her or it doesn't. It did for me. I am sure that Atlanta has much to recommend it but while I was there I couldn't WAIT to get out. It is not the place for me.

Atlanta doesn't have light rail, only heavy rail. We are about to have a streetcar line though. It is under construction now and will run from the ML King Center to CNN/Centennial Park area and back.

There are a few light rail lines in the proposal stages right now, the most notable ones being the Beltline corridor loop around the city and the Clifton corridor from Emory University to Lindbergh Center but there are others being looked at in Cobb county and Gwinnett county as well. It will be a while before any of these come online though.

Sure it beats it in quantity but historically New Orleans is the oldest system in the country since 1835 before Atlanta even existed and oldest street rail system in the world. Atlanta's MARTA rail system only started in 1976 around the same time as DC's Metro. Unlike MARTA the RTA street cars in New Orleans interact with more pedestrians at street level in a more dense historic environment.

The French Quarter alone is a unique cultural and art museum exhibit by itself. Atlanta doesn't have anything unique as the French Quarter to show case.

Continuous wall to wall density at every corner you turn. You can get this in a New Orleans neighborhood.

Westside of Jackson Square comparable to Boston's Quincy Market

Eastside of Jackson Square

Lively 24 hours a day 7 days a week (street level in New Orleans are more narrow and compact filled with more variety within walking distance) It had take nearly 300 years to reach this level that Midtown and Buckhead can only dream about. The streets even shut down to auto traffic for pedestrian over flow traffic at certain hours this isn't even a comparison.

Pirates Alley before the city of Atlanta and the automobile

The South's largest city that evolved from the Colonial period. The dense urban core of New Olreans is more compact than any area of Atlanta. Atlantic Station doesn't even come close.

When it comes to best suburb I'll go with Atlanta but when it comes to best urban neighborhood New Orleans easily wins this. This coming from someone who has actually lived in Atlanta and Louisiana.

Amen. Atlanta has a lot of planned communities which are somehow counted as part of the city. I may not be familiar enough with the place, but their "downtown" seemed very run down and lacking in unique cultural amenities. I was asked for change or harrassed once every five minutes over a lunch hour in what I was told was the "good" part of downtown while eating with suit wearing colleagues on a nice day in May. The city holds no appeal for me.

Atlanta is a flavorless sprawl that is the result of mad boosterism. If you aren't an African American, you probably won't like it (and I say this as a black man.) If you are a young white professional, especially a young attractive white professional female, expect to get your ass harrassed or spare changed in any part of downtown. They like to cover up this aspect of the ATL (bad for the tourists. Sounds racists.) Ladies and gents, it is TRUE.

I travel to ATL on the regular for business. Its okay. I spent two months in New Orleans and would love to live there.

I'll give you the better schools part (for now). But unemployment rates, Sept. 2012-Nola 6.7, ATL 8.5. There are myriad reasons that NOLA was the fastest growing city in the country last year, and the job market is a big one.

Culture: New Orleans. Very distinctive culture that is not replicated anywhere.
Shopping: Atlanta
Restaurants: New Orleans. Atlanta also has a good food scene, but it is tough to beat the creole and cajun food in N.O.
Economy: Usually Atlanta which has a quite diverse economy. In 2012 probably New Orleans, but I think Atlanta will be back
Quality of Life: Both are quite affordable, depends on what you want.
Housing costs: Seee above.
Public Transportation: Atlanta. The streetcars in NOLA are nice, but MARTA serves a lot more people. There is also a new streetcar under construction in Atlanta and plans for light rail.
Nightlife: Depends on what you want. I prefer New Orleans, but for those that prefers clubs, Atlanta offers more.
Art galleries: Close call. Probably Atlanta, but New Orleans certainly has a greater density and punches well above its weight in this category (Metro Atlanta is much larger than metro NOLA).
Weather: Atlanta offers more variety and all four seasons. NOLA is hotter.
Parks: Toss up. Audubon Park and City Park are great. Piedmont Park, Stone Mountain and Olympic Park are also great.
Music scene: Again, depends on taste. Music is more a part of the fabric of New Orleans. More popular music is produced in ATL.
Education: Probably Atlanta. I know Atlanta is better for colleges w/ Emory and Ga. Tech plus Ga. State, not as sure about k-12. Tulane is a good school, but not on Emory's level.
Lifestyle: Depends on what you want. NOLA has a more laid-back, artistic vibe, Atlanta is more business like, and I would argue probably better for families.

Both cities are good fits for certain kinds of people. Which is best for a particular person will depend on what that person likes.

Before Atlanta had Marta it had street cars. For a southern city it had a large street car system. Atlanta is no where as old as New Orleans but Atlanta is actually one of the older southern cities. It started to boom right after the civil war the general city is pre WII.

Again it's the age thing I can't knock New Orleans it's going win in terms of history, and New Orleans is consider one of most unique cities in the county. Actually Atlanta does have over 40 national historical districts so city isn't characterless. But this go back to my point Atlanta is more cosmopolitan there's no Buford Hwy in New Orleans.

So pics

This depends what people want,

Now you know Atlanta is all about the trees and nature, why the hell would Atlantans want Atlanta to be that dense? First off walkable is walkable so I don't care about boasting density, it gets to the point are where we no longer praising walkablity but density itself. Should Atlanta become a little more dense yes but that dense no and I don't care. New Orleans is denser it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out. However Intown Atlanta is walkable. Atlanta develop during the garden city movement a lot neighborhoods develop during this time. One thing that does stand out it's leafy near the core you can like Inman Park, Ansley Park note for their architecture. You can have a nice house in a leafy neighborhood be down the street from a CBD or just hope MARTA if you want. You get the city and a peace of mind.
