PONY - What makes the FARM BUREAU the favored source of insurance? We are in the flood plain and our foundation is just being put in. Time to find insurance. STATE FARM (who I have in MD) no longer insures property in our section. NATIONWIDE does, per our future neighbors up the street. Why FARM BUREAU?

The ACTIVE PAIR - Coming to a lot in your area (SJP) this Spring. Lock the gates?

People go with Farm Bureau because they still write coverage for coastal areas at a reasonable price. Two years ago, we checked with State Farm and Allstate, and their prices were way higher (for Onslow County) than Farm Bureau. You have to shop around for coverage.

I would go to a local "Broker". They have access to many markets and should be able to get you the best rate...

Farm Bureau, State Farm, and Allstate are insurance "Carriers".. or companies...

good broker should be able to get you multiple quotes from "A" rated companies. Don't go with any company with less than a "A" Best Rating..

If you need flood plain information about your property (or one you are interested in), use this site:

FMIS: North Carolina Floodplain Mapping Information System

If you use bank financing, they will require flood insurance IF you are within the 100 year flood plain. FYI The site shows both 100 year and 500 year flood plains.
