I'm not sure why people say Hartford should be more like Providence. Providence is nothing special, has some pretty bad areas, and is way outperformed by Hartford. And I say this as someone who isn't very pro-Hartford.

Well for me I just like the feel of Providence. It feels more like New England then Hartford does. That said If Hartford could ever really reconnect with it's river front, maybe open up the park river I think it would be a lot better for the feel thing as well. It's not like Hartford hasn't made improvements as well Front st and the riverfront are way better then they were in the 90's But I think further decking over 91 would be a good idea.

Providence is more similar to New Haven (college town), but also feels more like a real city than Hartford. Much more vibrant with things to do, dining, bars, pedestrian traffic, etc. It also has some nicely preserved Colonial neighborhoods.

The advantage Providence has is that it's a cheap bedroom town for Boston. There's both commuter rail and Amtrak to Back Bay Station and South Station. You can live somewhere urban, fairly nice, and affordable and still get to your Pru, Hancock, or Financial Center job without a soul-crushing commute.

So my usual Connecticut rail infrastructure rant once again. I'm sitting on Amtrak 55 underneath NY Penn at the moment. I left Hartford 3 hours ago. Pathetic.

That's absurd, considering you can drive from Hartford to NYC in much less than 2 hours without traffic.

Yeah, but you can't drive from New England to Philly for $53.00 and I do that trip weekly at the moment. Even ignoring depreciation, gasoline and tolls are almost that much. The Jer$ey Turnpike ain't cheap.

Uh... that is a New York problem. Nothing to do with Connecticut really. Jay

I don't really know who's problem it is, but it does take 3 hours on Amtrak to get to Penn from Hartford. That's almost double the driving time.

I don't understand this comment. NY is important for CT and much of CT is part of the NY Metropolitan Area so transportation infrastructure problems most certainly do have something to do with CT. It's not about blame, it's about the infrastructure that is in place serving CT residents.
