From what I've heard via TV reports, the shooter was a soldier. In any case, 2nd time although we don't yet know the motive. What a shame.

From what is sounds like, the reaction time for the response was quick, maybe prompting the shooter to kill himself instead of going after more people.

I just saw the latest news on it. Yes, he was a soldier, returned from Afghanistan.

He was being treated for depression and mental illness and was going to be reviewed for PTSD.

Apparently not fast enough.

yep, it is sad that they don't trust the soldiers to be armed on base. One terrorist attack and one nut job and they will still try to blame the gun.

Our veterans deserve so much better. How many vets have been cashiered from the armed services after going to war and coming back with PTSD - because of "mental health issues" that they actually got while fighting for this country?

More than 31,000 since 2008.

But it isn't ONE terrorist attack, or ONE nut job, its plenty, and even more dead. The earth didn't spring into existence yesterday.

It's normal to be upset over this shooting. But I don't feel it's just to label this guy as a "nut job". He was on medication for depression and anxiety and likely had PTSD as well. Antidepressants can have side effects that can cause extreme thought patterns and behaviors. Patients are normally told to continue on taking them when they complain and give it more time. Of course the doc's aren't the ones having to deal with these side effects. So who's to say it may not have been a combination of factors related to medication and his yet untreated PTSD that caused this tragic outcome. The staff doctors and the system will not be held responsible if this is the case. People jump to insults in these cases when they know little about this man nor walked in his shoes. The system has also been pathetically slow in processing veteran claims and helping the vet get needed care since the soldiers have returned home. Too bad there wasn't outrage and name calling by the masses over that issue.

Would you call a war veteran a "nut job" if he committed suicide? Have you looked at the alarming numbers of suicides of vets that have returned from the Iraq war? Obviously there is a huge problem, so much so they are now introducing legislation to attempt to reduce the numbers. That long unnecessary war based on lies has torn so many families apart. It's a crying shame.

Pathetic how in just a handful of postings about this tragedy that it turns into political speculation and invective.

"one nut job"..."they"..."blame the gun."

I feel sorry for all of those killed and injured at Fort Hood and I feel sorry for the shooter also. My prayers go out to all involved.

Posted by Slingshot(USMC 64-70).....In memory of Leslie Leas. Committed suicide years after his tour in Vietnam as a Army medic.
