I think China is going to get a handle on this, for the same reason that the virus was allowed to spread unchecked for the first 7 weeks or so, meaning, their authoritarian state. Initially the local authorities censored any reports of the virus, and punished those who had made the reports, and forced them to retract their reports. Once it became obvious that the hospitals were gridlocked and people were dying in the streets, the Central Communist Party got involved to combat the virus with quarantines. At this point, the areas that are under quarantine are absolute ghost cities, with big black drones to keep the population inside their homes.

https://www.cbronline.com/news/china-drones-coronavirus

The reports out of China of numbers infected are grossly underestimated, since only the sickest are being seen, and there are not enough test kits to test people for infection. But the rate of rise in the number of deaths (you don't need a test kit to confirm that, just a body and a history from the family that the person got sick, their cough got worse and worse, they couldn't breathe, they died) has begun to slow. Access to medical care hasn't improved, if anything, it's the same or worse, so a slowing of the rate of rise of reported deaths could mean that the quarantine is working, at least in the areas where it's being enforced.

Our government and culture would not be able to achieve this kind of totalitarian monitoring and enforcement.

Philippines is reporting that the 44 year old Chinese man who died showed signs of improvement, but then over a period of 24 hours took a turn for the worse and died.

Germany now has 10 cases, which started with one asymptomatic woman from China infecting others at a meeting.

Some governments seem determined to share the message that there is nothing to worry about.

On January 19, there were 278 cases in Mainland China, and 4 in other places. Today there are almost 15,000 confirmed cases in China and another 20,000 suspected cases, and almost 200 confirmed cases in 27 other countries.

"So this Coronavirus was known to have a peculiar relationship with the flu vaccine called 'viral interference'. Basically; the flu shot primes your body for susceptibility to Coronavirus.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31607599"

I read this article by Wolff et al. Influenza vaccination and respiratory virus interference among Department of Defense personnel during the 2017–2018 influenza season.

Table 5 shows an ↑ risk of certain virus infections in the vaccinated (influenza-vaccinated) versus non-vaccinated group.
Below is part of Table 5 showing coronavirus in vaccinated vs non-vaccinated along with odds ratio (OR) and p-value.

Coronavirus 507 (7.8) 170 (5.8) 1.36 (1.14, 1.63) <0.01

This would indicate that those receiving the influenza vaccine would have a 36% greater risk of coronavirus infection.

Yet the authors state in the conclusion:

"The overall results of the study showed little to no evidence supporting the association of virus interference and influenza vaccination."

And like a ping-pong match, the authors stated this in the discussion section:

"Additionally, the laboratory data in our study showed increased odds of coronavirus and human metapneumovirus in individuals receiving influenza vaccination. The study found similar results to our study found no association between influenza vaccination and RSV, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus or coronavirus [12].

The findings in reference 12 by Sundaram et al (Influenza Vaccination Is Not Associated With Detection of Noninfluenza Respiratory Viruses in Seasonal Studies of Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness) were: "There was no association between influenza vaccination and detection of RSV, adenovirus, human metapneumovirus, human rhinovirus, or coronavirus."

I am a HemOnc MD but not a specialist in infectious diseases. With this caveat, I would opine that we have no definitive data of virus interference due to influenza vaccination, I have written to author Gregory Wolff and asked for clarification.

This description of life currently in Wuhan is terrifying. Apparently, what was suspected, is true. There is a large shortage of medical equipment, and that people aren't getting tested because there aren't any tests. People are being turned away from the hospitals, which are gridlocked, and being sent on a bureaucratic runaround to the all-powerful neighborhood committees, to get permission from them to get into the hospital. No test, no hospital bed. But you cannot get a test. And you're too sick to walk all over the city to find one. People are giving up and going home to either get better, or die, and in either case, to infect their family members.

There is evidence for efficacy in animal studies against MERS:

And other human coronaviruses:

The Chinese are using 2 HIV meds in current treatments: ritonavir and the one you mentioned remdesivir as well as anti- malarial chloroquine.

The inhibitory effect on 2919-nCov was discovered according to the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, Wuhan Institute of Virology( under the leadership of Chinese Academy of Science )

Chinese are saying 2019-nCov resembles 78% of SARS virus and 96% of bats coronavirus
Allegedly enters human cell through ACE2 receptor and according to them
SARS specific monoclonal antibody CR3022 can effectively bind to 2019-nCov receptors and prevent infection- so could help in meds development

I would not rely on our mass media- the panic inducing click bait. A lot of dubious and incorrect info.
I am trying to go through some other more reliable sources to verify everything...

We have many international students at a university and a polytechnic in my burbs. In fact all retail shops have signs other than English to facilitate these customers. Our local general hospital is rather small and old to effectively handle this disease.

Orbiter, you are from Canada, right?

This is what I see now;

"Canada is attempting to charter a plane to take Canadians from Wuhan, China, back to Canada, the statement said. Hubei is the epicenter of the outbreak
There are currently 543 Canadians in Hubei who have registered with the voluntary Registration of Canadians Abroad service. There are currently 15,219 Canadians in China (including Hong Kong) who have registered with the voluntary service..."

The rest is here -

I wonder how many of the Canadians are tourism babies.
