Important in a community: Safety, good schools, friendly neighbors, close to shopping/supermarkets, good non-chain restaurants.

Denver is a very safe city (for the most part). There are a few bad areas, but not where you are looking. The crime in Denver is very centralized and is NOT the most popular areas. As compared to most cities its size,
Denver has a very low rate of crime. I lived in Denver for 8 years and never felt threatened. As a single woman, a married woman and a woman with a child. That includes a lot of wandering downtown.

Highlands Ranch would be great. There are a couple malls close by, but the best shopping would be a 20 minute drive to Cherry Creek.

The best school district it the Cherry Creek School Distict. It does not cover Highlands Ranch though. There are some very nice areas in Greenwood Village, the Tech Center and even South Aurora where you can be in the school district and in very nice area. When I move back I WILL Definitely live in this area.

Work: I work at home, wife doesn't have a job yet since we're very early in our process of deciding where in the country to live.

As someone who has lived all over the country, Denver is the best. I have never lived anywhere as wonderful and am desperately trying to get back!

Hobbies: Going to movies, going out to eat, going to the gym or going for walks (occasionally hiking), wife likes shopping. We don't have kids yet, but are planning on them within the next couple of years and anticipate that our lives/lifestyles will change radically when that happens.[/quote]

Your life does change when you have kids and I had my first in Denver. You will find that it is easy to go to movies, out to eat the gym or hiking and wherever you please. I could discretely breastfeed wherever I wanted without a second glance. (I don't have that now) The best restaurants are downtown, and I would take my infant and toddler everywhere on the train and in the city and they would be accommodated. Denver is a hip but family friendly city. Movies are everywhere. Parks with trails are everywhere as are bike trails. You have no worries.

Downtown Denver is actually a downtown, and one of the few. The only other cities in the US I have found with an actual "down town" are New York and Seattle.

I hope you move to Denver and if you do I am horribly jealous.

The schools on the west side of CCSD (Cherry Creek High School and Smoky Hill High School attendance areas) have relatively large Jewish populations, both reform and conservative, with synagogues nearby. Finding a home for $300 takes some work, but is possible.
