It will be good for Detroit to get a light rail. I think Woodward NB/SB and Jefferson EB/WB would be prime locations for it. That would be nice.

Default Environmental Impact Study Complete!

Okay, so there is a draft of the completed EIS up on the Woodward Light Rail website. The document is a massive .pdf so it takes a while to open up. Having this study completed means we're in the final stages of the pre-construction process.

There is also a second public comment period that begins today January 28, 2011 and ends March 14, 2011. A meeting will be held on Saturday, February 12th at the Detroit Public Library.

We're getting close folks. This is very exciting.

Indeed. I've just started to crack the cover. Hopefully, I can get through some of it this weekend. Nothing better than a cup of coffee, bagel, and a huge document about light rail!

Default Friendly Update

With the Environmental Impact Study complete 7 months ahead of time, a public hearing about the plan for light rail was held at the Detroit Public Library over the weekend. By all accounts, the mood of the room was very optimistic about the plans set forth in the EIS. The biggest debate seems to be over whether the line should run down the center of Woodward south of Grand Boulevard or at curbside. It is thought that the center lane configuration would be more efficient and be less disruptive to traffic. On the other hand, curbside is said to be more convenient for pedestrians and would spur more development. There is also some question as to how many stops there should be in Midtown and what configuration the downtown loop should take, or if there should even be a downtown loop given that the PM is already an effective downtown circulator. The elephant in the room is whether the suburban communities north of Eight Mile Road will be interested in participating in regional light rail, or whether the line will remain in Detroit/Wayne County. The planning committee is taking public comments until March 14th.

So far, things are moving along pretty quickly. The EIS organized all of the data and narrowed the options down to those covered in the study. The committee will have until July to decide upon the details and once a plan is finalized, construction is expected to begin this coming fall. Stay on the lookout for news and updates, but I expect it to be pretty quiet until we get a final decision in the summer.
