I hope the OP has learned something here. If she wants to lose weight and improve her health, she should stay away from ALL sodas.

I noticed she also was inquiring about HCG diet (WHICH NO ONE SHOULD EVER EVER EVER EVER DO) so I am thinking that there may really be a potential health issue with her so she REALLY needs to be educated on health and proper eating habits.

OP, since you are looking into HCG injections/diet and questioning why diet soda is bad, I HIGHLY suggest you look into P90x, Body For Life or similar programs where diet/nutrition is included as part of the exercise program. But whatever you do, stay far far far away from HCG and since we all know that soda NOT HEALTHY, do whatever you can to limit your soda intake. Zero soda is best, so dont buy it when you go to the market and dont have any in your home.

Almost never drank any water, either. These wonderful habits (not my fault really; I just didn't know) landed me in ER and a hospital, a few days short of kicking the bucket. I was on horrendous medication for some time as it couldn't be avoided at this point, but I've been functioning OK on my own for 8 months now after a drastic change of diet. I'll never touch Aspartame and Sucralose (Splenda) again! Seeing the big bags of Splenda meant for baking in the grocery stores gives me the creeps these days.
It was your "horrendous medication" that most likely landed you in the ER--not the diet sodas. Ask your doc if you don't believe me. And I'm also guessing you were overweight, sednetary, depressed, and on a lousy diet as well. How am I doing so far?
For cryin' out loud people, buy a clue! Diet Soda is fizzed-up water and artificial sweetener & color, all of which have been around for donkey's years. In moderation it will NOT harm you. (Read my earlier post on what's reall wrong with diet soda.)
Human nature amuses me: people are too laze to take care of themselves correctly with diet and exercise so they try to point fingers at an evil "magic bullet" like Diet Coke which caused their ills.
It's the McDonald's hot coffee-spilled-in-the-lap lady all over again. LOL

Studies continue to point towards how bad diet soda is for you.

It's one of those vices I am addicted to. I know it's bad for you but I can't stop drinking the stuff.

Drinking This Is Just As Dangerous As Drinking Soda, New Study Says

Quote:
According to a new research letter published in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which was based on research and data from the French NutriNet-Santé, consuming "diet" sodas and other artificially-sweetened drinks is just as bad for your heart as drinking regular sodas. The study drew on a large sample size of more than 100,000 participants over the course of a decade, and "artificially-sweetened drinks" were defined as those with "non-nutritive" sweeteners. During ten years of follow-up questions, both those who drank sugary beverages and those who drank artificially sweetened beverages showed greater risk of heart disease.

"Our study suggests artificially sweetened beverages may not be a healthy substitute for sugar drinks," wrote Eloi Chazelas, a PhD student and lead author of the study and a member of the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team at Sorbonne Paris Nord University, Inserm, Inrae, Cnam, who went on to note that the findings could have regulatory consequences. "This data provides additional arguments to fuel the current debate on taxes, labeling and regulation of sugary drinks and artificially sweetened beverages."

Wish I could see the whole study. I'm confused because it said high consumers averaged 185ml/day yet a can of coke is 330ml. That's only half a can of coke per day for a high consumer?

Also would be interesting to see what the caloric intake is of the high consumers. I bet it is sky high.

According to this study,

''People who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87% increased risk -- or nearly twice the risk -- of pancreatic cancer compared to individuals consuming no soft drinks," says study lead author Noel T. Mueller, MPH, a research associate at the Cancer Control Program at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. The study is published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research."

I'm not a soda drinker but I do have a friend who drank 2-3 cans of Diet Coke/day and developed pancreatitis. She has since reduced, but not eliminated, her consumption on doctor's advice.

And Alex Trebek (Jeopardy host), who recently passed away from pancreatic cancer, admitted in an interview to starting his days with a candy bar and a can of diet soda.

It's happened enough that it became a standard joke of some stand-up routines. The person who orders a sausage-and-peppers hero, chips, and a diet coke. Or a Big Mac, fries, and a diet coke. As if that -120 calories you're withholding is going to do the trick.

Yep I have seen it with my own eyes, the lady that orders two big macs, two large fries but then orders the diet Coke.

I believe it. 2 or more a day equates to over 14 cans of soda a week. That is a ton.

I am a lifetime diet soda drinker. I enjoy a mini Diet Coke from time to time, or a diet soda at the drive through when I buy a burger. They have not harmed me in any way.

They often have caffeine, so one should drink them prudently.

I was thinking just today how I need to stop drinking diet soda. I love the taste, but the more diet soda I drink, the more I crave sweets. Does anyone else experience similar cravings from drinking diet soda?
