Thanks for the link. It showed United States obesity rates in 2007-2008 of 32.2% for adult men and 35.5% for adult women. Not as much difference as I would have guessed, but a slight difference nonetheless.

Quite an over-reaction. Aren't you lumping my thread with some others which have made you angry in the past? All I did was ask a bunch of questions. And they were not rhetorical questions, as I did not know the answers. My intention was not to make anyone "feel like crap". I have no idea who gave you the rep point you didn't like, but try to understand that the angry, aggressive, and in-your-face style of your responses fairly begs for snide, insulting answers. Not everyone will stop to reflect on the emotional pain of past put-downs which has prompted your style. I have, and I am sorry for both the emotional state and the physical state in which you find yourself. And I am sorry for the insensitivity of some other people whom you have encountered both in real life and on these boards. You have made some strides in self-acceptance; perhaps working to shed some of your anger will lead to good results. Best wishes.

I have noticed that in many different threads relating to weight discrimination and people's attitudes about weight, the primary militant defenders of the over-weight and obese seem to be women. Not exclusively, but primarily. I am wondering several things (and the discussion is welcome to go beyond these as far as I am concerned):

1. Are there any credible national statistics on the percentage of men as opposed to women who are obese? Overweight?
2. Does society give obese men a free pass compared to women?
3. Are women harder on each other on this subject than men?
4. Biologically, is it harder for women to lose weight than for men?
5. Provided I am correct that most "fat militants" (there must be a better term, so help me with that too) are women, why is this so? Or perhaps I am not correct.
1. i don't know
2. Yes society gives men a free pass if they are overweight
3. there are a lot of factors about catty women
4. Women have children and gain weight, some never quite get back to where they where prior to having a 8lb of life pushed from their body. I think people have a simplistic way of thinking about weight loss. I think genetics come in to play, I have never been the 120lbs I am suppose to be for my height despite being athletic(I played soccer in HS and college) the lowest I have gotten was 160 which is still considered as obese at 5'4in. I have learned that not everyone's body responds to the same foods. I workout 3-4 days a week at 1 1/2 hrs each session and all I lose is inches and not weight. I don't each sugars and alot of process things. Genetically, there is no one within my family that is at the weight for their height doctors say they should be at which is 125lbs for 5'3in. My sisters have all had 2-4 children and their bodies have never been back to the size 9-10 they where prior to having the children. I think hormones have alot to do with weight gain as well. My doctor told me that if your hormones are not in balance it could make it very difficult to loose weight and many women may have an under active thyroid which can cause weight gain
5. There are more women that are fat militant I would surmise due to men not having their bodies/ hormones taken over by growing life which adds 50 to 60 to 80lbs( my sister had twins and she gained 80lb). The women that make their living based on how they look can hirer nannies to babysit while they spend 3hrs a day doing yoga(sara jessica parker said this after she had her last child) to get back to their pre pregnancy body

1. I think more women are obese. Race factors included to narrow it down. And I am lucky enough to be in the fattest demographic of women not by any fault of my own.
You are just making excuses for yourself. I am in the same group as you and am twice our age yet I am fit and healthy. You need to take personal responsibility for what you do with and to your body.

2. I think overweight men aren't judged by men or women as harshly
3. Women judge themselves harder than anyone else judges them. The perception on tv, magazines, etc of women doesn't help
4. I think it's harder to lose for women - especially after menopause
5. Women are more emotional and care more how they are physically perceived than men do. I think women are also more apt to be defensive about weight because they take any criticism as a personal attack

Maybe "fat acceptance advocate" would sound better than "fat militant."

1.somebody posted those above
2.Go shopping in the mens department, you'll find sizes up to 3x on almost every rack. Go shopping in the womens department, the plus sizes are hidden away in a corner, there's less than 1/4 the choices there are in other sizes, and most of the clothes are just plain fugly. So it's easier to dress yourself to look like the rest of the world when you're an obese man.
3.I don't think women are harder on each other. Most fat people are harder on themselves than anyone else is ever going to be.
4.Our bodies seem designed to store fat. I can diet with my husband, we eat exactly the same, I exercise and he doesnt, he loses 40 lbs and I lose 5. I have a larger frame and more muscle than him, so you'd think I would be able to lose the fat easier, but it doesn't work that way.
5.Obesity is an illness. We don't make fun of the disabled, or special needs people, why is it so acceptable and even encouraged to make fun of the obese?

Not to get off-topic, you can't seriously compare obesity to a disability. Seriously?

You can DO something about obesity. It make take a long time; you may need some outside help. But, you can change it. You cannot change a disability.

Fitness is simple, it can be done any time any where at will.
Absolutely true! And it doesn't have to be alot of activity and it needn't take up much time. EG, if you drop down and do just 5 push-ups 10 times a day, that's 50 push-ups a day or 350 push-ups over the course of a week.....without ever breaking a sweat. Can you imagine how different ones's triceps, chests, and shoulders would look a year later following a simple routine like this. Can you imagine how different you'd feel about yourself a year later. All these wonderful benefits without ever breaking a sweat!

I have read somehwere that black (and native americans) tend to develop high BP earlier in life and it is more severe than other races. I am both so that is a double whammy. So far, mines has not really been going down even with exercise.

The clothes made for fat women are really ugly. Why do the skinny people get all the cute clothes? Sooner or later this country will have no choice but to cater to larger people. We already have "plus" junior sizes so I guess our strategy is working.
