There maybe some 'advantages' about being "overweight" (not obese) as opposed to "normal", although I can't think of anything other than being warmer in winter...whether I am right or wrong, the disadvantages would outweigh (no pun intended) any (advantages)...FWIW.

Is being a smoker okay? Is being a drug user ok? Is working too much ok?

Depends on how far you want to go with it I suppose...

Are you the have one cigarette after work person, or the pack a day smoker? Are you a couple pounds over weight or a lot of pounds over weight?

No doc it's the internet.
Where idiots with a theory choose not to believe someone with practical knowledge and evidence.
No one is interested in your experience - you've got to find a story on the internet to prove you point

Obesity is defined as being 20% above your ideal body weight. The highest healthy weight for a woman my age/height is 141 lb. If a 141 lb woman gained 40 lb she would be almost 30% above her ideal weight. People do not have to be 100 lb overweight to be considered obese.

It's not okay to me for ME to be fat, but other people's weight is none of my business.

I don't approve of or agree with those who seem to make it their personal mission to put down every overweight person. I highly doubt most of them are really as concerned about health, to be honest. Treating someone so badly that they feel horribly about themselves isn't good for health either, ya know.

And on these forums, I can point you to dozens of threads like it without even having to go to the most vitriol forums like Politics and Current Events. But ask the question, "How can I be kind to someone today?" and people can't even comprehend the message, much less the point.

Maybe if it weren't for this inherent sickness in our society, more people wouldn't be medicating their pain away with drugs and food.
I agree. Sometimes I wonder why I keep coming back to this forum. There are so many self-righteous people here that it's ridiculous. It's amazing how just about everyone on the C-D forum is wealthy, in excellent shape and perfect health, 100 percent responsible, loves every aspect of their jobs, etc. It's so nice that we can be perfect when we're on the Internet, right?

However, people who are "perfect" in every other aspect of their lives generally aren't as hate-filled as a lot of the posters on this forum.

We're living in an age where for the first time in history poor people are fatter than rich people. It always used to be the other way round. But now food and entertainment are cheap and the dumbest and poorest in life believe entitlement comes before self-respect.
Binge eating disorder is just a fancy name to make the lazy and greedy feel better.
That may be partly true, but ya know what? For people who are poor and have very few joys or splurges in their lives, a $1 sundae from McDonald's can really make their day. Maybe you have never been poor, but it is a miserable existence.

To be honest, once a person reaches 80, I feel like it's fair game.

I'm not saying they should start eating the most unhealthy diets in the world or anything, but if they've made it to 80 and have been fat for 50 years or have been smoking since they were 16, screw it. Why quit now, so they can live to be 92 instead of 91 and be miserable the whole time? LOL.

I have a boss who is a health nut, extremely thin, and weirdly obsessed with food. She rarely eats during the day except to snack on dried banana chips and stuff like that. I did see her get a small cup of soup once or twice in the winter. She once snatched a cookie from one of my coworker's desk, a slightly overweight woman, and yelled at the other coworker who had given it to her.

Anyway, her mother lives with her and her husband. She called me from home about something and then was telling me that her mother requested a hot dog for lunch on her 94th birthday. She was horrified, but she broke down and let her have a hot dog. Then she said her mother wanted a drink in the afternoon, and kept asking when she could have her birthday drink, and my boss kept putting it off because she didn't want to give it to her before 5 p.m. I'm thinking "For God's sake, the woman in NINETY-FOUR YEARS OLD, give her the freakin' hot dog and martini when she wants it! She might not make it to five o'clock!"

No kidding. For me it's the "train wreck" syndrome. You know it's going to be bad, but you can't keep yourself from looking.

I don't give one iota of credence to anyone here who claims to be a physician, PT, or some other form of expert in the health field, especially when you can clearly see by their posts that they have zero experience with or understanding of people who struggle with weight. If by some off chance they actually are in the medical field, that's actually a more frightening prospect than the belief that they're lying!
