Collies, labrador mixes. Had a lab/weimaraner mix (great dog) for 14 years, currently fostering a lab/springer mix. They are such intelligent willing to please dogs
I lived in rural NC for many years and had all of the hounds..so great as they get along with each other with less boundaries than other breeds. In an area were dogs are treated (or neglected) as tools and where poverty is rampant I "wintered over" many a lost bear or coon hound until the owner "magically appeared" in the spring. I would love a more intelligent dog as now I have more time to spend with one. I am not fond of alot of drama without cause so that pretty much eliminated small dogs. I think my next dog will be a McNab Border Collie or a Border Terrier. Just looking for a more thoughtful, engaging medium sized companion the next time around. I really miss having a dog in my life. Responsible pet ownership is just an example of how animals bring out the best in people.
I realize this is an old thread that was recently resurrected, but I couldn't resist.
I don't have a favorite "breed", but I do have a favorite "type" of dog.
I love dogs with soft, social, affectionate personalities...."mushy" dogs, the kind of dogs that melt right into you when you pet them. I love dogs that offer lots of sweet social gestures when they look at you; they have soft, squinty eyes, their ears are back, their tails low and wagging. I love dogs that want to make gentle social contact with people around them...they gently nuzzle, lick or place their paws on you to say "I am here, please pet me!".
I love dogs that are good off leash, that you can take for a hike in the woods, who will pause and look over their shoulder to let you catch up if they get too far ahead of you, who always want to make sure they know where you are. I love dogs that are not aggressive with other animals, who can live in my home with cats and small pets in a "peaceable kingdom". I love dogs that are patient with children, who seem to realize that the small ones need extra gentleness and tolerance. I love dogs who LOVE people, and are friendly and appropriate with other dogs....they have good "dog manners", and are neither bullies nor pests.
I love dogs that will allow me to take ANYTHING away from them...food, toy, treat...without threatening me with violence by growling or snapping.
And I especially love dogs that "smile" when they are happy to see me.
Dogs like this come in many different breeds and mixes....sadly, I think they are becoming harder and harder to find. I hope when it's time to choose my next dog, I am able to find one.
My Catahoula Leopard Hound is the dog I have been waiting for all my life. He is an ornery little piece of work and a powder keg of energy, but he is SO much fun and so damn sweet. Not to mention terrifyingly intelligent.
He gets along well with kids, adults and other dogs and has excellent recall when he is off leash. He's protective of his home, but easygoing and social when he is outside his territory. He destroys his toys with glee, but hasn't laid a tooth on anything of mine since he was a pup.
My favorite is the German Shepherd. I also adore these little guys:
Chihuahua (the white ones are so cute)
Queensland Heeler/Australian Shepherd
Tenterfield Terrier
Jack Russell
-Cheers.
