My Japanese wife, like most literate Asians, prefers the term "Oriental." She likes the way it contrasts with Occidental me.

Besides, "Oriental" is not a slur like wop, spick, mick, mocky, squarehead, gink, g00k, or hunky (which was perverted by black racists to "honky"). It simply means "east"...

I know tons of Asian-American who find the term offensive for one reason or another (I have been corrected many times). Did your wife grow up here or in Japan?

Tokyo. She's an actual unhyphenated Asian PhD who prefers the term "Oriental." She finds "Asian" overly clinical and way too generic.

I believe the question was, did he have any experience, and the answer is no. He merely occupied a chair while a member of the senate, he did nothing, he accomplished nothing, therefore, no experience...

Remove the phrase "while a member if the senate"' and you have a relatively accurate description of most white-collar workers. This is troubling.

"Political correctness" is a bit of a fuzzy term. What exactly does it mean? If it means that we cannot broad-brush slime an entire group of people, as Trump has done, then I am all for political correctness. If it means that we can't say 'kitchen cabinet,' 'that one,' 'you people' etc. then I am opposed.

This being said,

Take myself as example, I am mixed German/Irish/Hawaiian/Japanese. My grandpa (100% ethnic white German) didn't view many white people as true white. lol (but this is another topic)

He would call any Asian person oriental because he was old fashioned. He happened to be one of the most successful, intelligent, nice, open minded person I know. I loved him and he loved me.

It really depends on the person's intention. Some words (example: The N word) clearly are derogatory terms, but certain words like "oriental" are not necessarily offensive. These kind of words only have meanings when you give them meanings.
True, and your grandpa was fine. It's just outdated for someone today, though it is not a bad word at all. It's meaning is not bad, just old and out of place.

Not at Oxford, apparently.

Faculty of Oriental Studies - University of Oxford

Or Chicago...

Or other places, where learning has not yet been supplanted by the more ignorant aspects of political correctness.

What entire group of people did Trump broad brush?
