And don't ignore little things like TV. The BBC has great programs, Berlin and Germany as a whole can be a pain in the ... in terms of TV and radio. Such things can make a huge difference in terms of feeling at home.

Most countries in Europe receive the BBC though
To the OP: have you considered southern France or Spain?
Dublin... could be fine but I can't stand cloudy skies all the time
I grew up in Italy and I now live in California. I'm "spoiled"! I think I'd rather have the German type of weather than the Irish. Sure it'll be colder in the winter but I'd also get 30-35 C or more during the summer. And considerably more sunshine I believe.
Thats not true. Dublin has lovely weather in the Summer and Germany does not get 35C in the Summer. Spain does'nt even get that. As said before you will not get California sun here in Europe. You really cant let the weather get to you.

It does get that hot occasionally in Germany, too. Munich's all-time high so far was 36.1°, Mannheim's 41°, etc.
In southern Europe the climate is not that much different from California (and don't forget that California is not all San Diego, either). Lisbon is just about 3°C cooler than San Diego. The same goes for cities in southern Spain.
Sunshine is a bit less, about 2800 hours/year in southern Europe vs 3000 in California. But I guess that difference is negligible

35/40C it's quite normal in most of Spain during July and August.
And from someone who comes from southern Europe, the weather in Dublin during the summer can be cold and cloudy.
