Didn't know that about Italy. I thought it'd be France. The times I was there, I really can't remember hearing that much English on the radio.
While travelling to Southern France we had to switch stations every couple hundred km and all I heard was French music really, with some English songs now and then but very few.
Foreign songs are still popular here (Julio Iglesias Bailando was the most sold single in 2014), but not as much as elsewhere though, singles from foreign artists sell but their albums usually don't, this week there are 3 albums from foreign artists amongst the most sold ones (Madonna, Mark Knopfler and anotherone i can't remember). Music tastes is where Italy is more international but when it comes to films, television shows and especially food ours is always more popular.
Last week, the 5 most best-selling albums were of Finnish bands, 7 of the top 10. Foreigners who made the list were The Prodigy, Calvin Harris and Sia.
The 10 most sold books in 2014 were from world-famous authors like Valtonen, Remes, Kyrö, Kinnunen, Härkönen, Vuorinen and Mäki. The only foreigners in the top ten were Patricia Cornwell, Jo Nesbø and Mari Jungstedt.
In the top 10 movies watched in 2014 five were domestic.

The Prodigy? Really? I mean, really? I thought they stopped making music in the 90s.
I'm completely out of the loop with what youngsters are listening to these days but it seems that in France and Italy the ratio between national and anglosaxon music is about 50/50 in terms of what is appreciated.
In France it's largely due to the popularity of rap acts, although I would hardly call rap what this scene has become there.
In Italy there are many popular (male and female) singers among the younger population, more so than in France it seems.
It may be true Italy resists Americanization well but I am not sure that it's dubbing that makes it stand out. Foreign TV programs are systematically dubbed in Germany, France and Spain as well.
For the record, it's incredibly more difficult to find subtitled movies in theaters where I live than when I lived in France (which was in the second largest metro area)
I live in one of the major cultural centers of Italy, almost 1-million metro population, home of the oldest university in the world and with plenty of students, and there is only one theater that shows a lot of subtitled movies. Then there are 2 or 3 other theaters that show it like once a week in the evening and that's about it. So I can only imagine how scarce it is in southern areas, even in large cities.
Also, most of my friends are not used at all to seeing subtitled movies and even have more difficulty than me to follow movies that are subtitled in Italian whereas it's their mother tongue.
Try finding subtitles for movies on the internet. More often than not, you find any random language but Italian is not listed !
I'd say the popularity of subtitled movies in italy now is similar to what it was in France in the early 90s. It is growing in popularity but it's still very much a marginal thing.
In France some hip people would look down on you if you said you prefered dubbed films This phenomenon does not exist in Italy.
