Find a fitness class that is for older adults. My Y has some excellent ones. These are not the classes where you sit in a chair, but a real workout class for 'active older adults', and most of the attendees are very fit.

Very close to what they've been doing all along if a bit slower or fewer than what they did at 30.

I agree. I worked at fish hatcheries in Oregon for 31 years. Pretty physical work cleaning raceway ponds, feeding 40 ponds of fish by hand, picking out fish mortalities every day, collecting and spawning adult Chinook and summer steelhead, unloading feed trucks, doing repairs on equipment, mowing several acres of grass, building stuff. i got to sit in the office for an hour or two everyday, but the rest of the time was very busy. I think I averaged 5 miles of walking every day.
Since retiring in 2011, I still walk 3 to 5 miles every day.

I'm 62. I ski during the winter. I skied over 32,000 vertical feet a couple days ago, although that is above average for me. I try to ski about 80 days each winter, and try to get in about 1.5 to 2 million vertical feet each winter.

What do 60 year olds do for their fitness routine?

Turn the pages of the books I am reading.
I have about 20 books in progress at any given time.

Some of them are 800 pages, so lifting the hefty 800-page hardbound books is also included in my fitness routine.

I walk 8000 steps 4x a week
1.5 to 2 hours weights 5x a week.
A physician told me men at over 40 should absolutely be doing weight training.

From what I've read everyone 50+ should be doing a combination of (i) cardio, (ii) weight training and (iii) yoga (or something to increase/maintain balance and flexibility). The combination of those three things seem to be the best for health and maintaining independence. If you can find one activity that combines two or three of these then that's even more efficient.

This isn't fitness unless you're doing it while treadmilling or walking/biking.
But you're working your brain. What your doing is probably my biggest weakness (I don't read as much as I should) ---and because I'm here posting on the message board. My own fault. Respect to you.

It is impossible for anyone to answer your question because nobody knows what kind of exercise you have been doing your entire life. I have know people who were competitive runners until they were 90. I use to lift weights with a guy who was 92. It is difficult to catch up with people who have been exercising their entire life if you have never done anything. It can be done but will take time. Other considerations will be your overall health, joints, and whether you're overweight. I suggest lifting weights and some type of cardiovascular activity. Start slowly, but make measurable progress.

How do Sylvester and Arnold's 70 year old bodies deal with such heavy weight on their joints lifting so heavy? I'm only 40 and use dumbbells, but my shoulder and elbow joints click (or whatever that's causing it). I was so scared that I was injuring myself that I stopped.
