I wonder if I'm the only girl who really doesn't like looking at guys in suits in ties??? No offense meant, but y'all end up looking the same. It's a clothing custom that I think is past its time.

For doctors, yes... it drags around pathogens from patient to patient.

Agree with strudel42. Suit and ties are fine for a formal occasion but everyday business? It's boring--everybody in the dark suit and trying to compensate with an interesting tie. I don't get it; they are uncomfortable and unlike clothing that is laundered regularly, ties are filthy. And they actually are rather silly looking when you think about it. As another poster commented, in the workplace women can wear almost anything short of jeans and a tank top and still be considered professional wear; men are expected to wear a tie every day? Makes no sense.

If we're going to get rid of ties, then to be fair we should also get rid of necklaces, bracelets, tattoos, hats, fake hair, colored hair, high heels, non-digital watches (talk about old-fashioned!), etc.

That's what needs to be outlawed!!! Those things are truly horrific. I never even allowed my sons, when they were little, to wear those things. If they needed a tie, which they did occasionally, I made sure it was at least a zip-tie.

My husband wears one occasionally for work, but not every day. Both of my sons, now in college, do have occasion to wear them. One of them wears one every day to work. All three of them are tie junkies. They love them. We can't go in any menswear store that they don't stop and look at ties. All of them have big collections. They see them as the only real way they can add color and personalize otherwise basic generic suits and sport coats.

Depending upon where you are going ties are nice and appropiate.
But realistically to sit in an office all day long behind a desk, it does seem somewhat unnecessary....

But that is how we are here in America, what was once a rule is always and forever, and never seems to be updated or amended......

Yeah seriously, you do have a point there. I think, not to be offensive, I too would take the tie.

How are people supposed to know I am wealthier and more cultured than they are if I am not wearing my tie?
