It seems that "oddities of (US) geography" has somehow morphed into a word game! Surely we haven't run out of oddities already!
Okay, here's one: The two US states that share their borders with the most other states (8 apiece) also share a border with each other. They are, of course, Missouri and Tennessee.
There are 3 Connecticut lakes at the head waters of the Connecticut River, the 1st COnnecticut lake is the furthers Downstream, the last water passes through, the 2nd is the 2nd, and the 3rd is the 1st.
Geography is more than just the physical surface of the earth. There is also Political Geography and Cultural Geography, which relate to the way people organize the surface of the earth. And even the way they name the parts of the earth, hence the "alphabetic" oddities.
In fact, the root of the word 'geography' comes from "writing a description of the earth". In other words, not just about the inert earth, but the elements of man's perception of it and the manner in which man describes it..
As a matter of fact, I have a blog about this. As someone who has a BA in Geography, I can agree with you.
Even though Georgia is an Atlantic seaboard state that borders on North Carolina, Atlanta is further west than any point in North Carolina, which is 500 miles long.
Another oddity is this. Even though Georgia is an Atlantic seaboard state, Georgia's Atlantic coast gets hit with hurricanes much less often than the states north and south of it.
Boone, NC has a Subtropical Highland climate, a global rariety. It has a low latitude of 36N, has summer high temperatures in the 70s, winter snowfall of 30-40 inches, and an elevation of 3300ft.
The westernmost point of Virginia is closer to 7 other state capitals then it is to Virginia's capital, Richmond.
