There have been doctoral dissertations written on why Philly did not develop as an intelectual center like Boston. I'm not sure the conclusion they came to. Something to do with industry and schools.
Simple, Philly doesn't try to pretend like they are better than NYC like Boston does.
Chicago and Houston have been having some fun lately as well in this regard. I'm still waiting to see the fight of the century between Steve-O and mpope as they try to decide whether Houston or Chicago is better!
The rivalry is sorta one-sided. In the 18th and part of the 19th century, Boston wore the crown.
How is this possible when baseball wasn't even invented until 1839? And the Red Sox didn't become a team until 1900, and the Yankees became a team in 1903.
So, in reality, New York has always worn the crown... The Yankees won their last WS in 2000, the Red Sox become a team in 1900. The Red Sox were amazing during the first decade and went downhill from 1918 up. As a Yankees fan, I can't help but to dwell on this and think that this is just a repeat of the 20th Century. Boston owns at first, but New York takes over.
Is “Big Papi†Boston’s “Babe?†Will he be in pinstripes or will the Red Sox draft an all-star who gets traded to the Yanks and creates another curse?

Thanks. I recently found them on a different message board, and now they're my new "toy." LOL! I'm sure in a few days I'll tire of them and just go back to the bland City-Data smilies.
Until that time let's just dance to my newest hip-hop single "Ain't No Party Like a Scranton Party 'Cuz a Scranton Party Don't Stop!"
It's not at all a fair match up, in my opinion. Maybe Los Angeles and Chicago.
Think of it as a regional rivalry; like DFW, Houston, and San Antonio (maybe throw Austin in the mix if necessary?) in Texas but the East Coast version.
Boston is considered to be more "cosmopolitan" than Philadelphia. The erudite Harvard/Back Bay/Beacon Hill gentry is comparable to the upper-crusty East Side Manhattanite.
Ha! Boston sophisticated and cosmopolitan? They wish. The average Manhattanite is ten times more cultured and quite a bit wealthier than some of the wealthiest Bostonians. They just think they are so special. They aren't... and haven't been for so long. It's so funny to see how insecure Bostonians have to use baseball to try and out-do New York. Shows how mature and "cultured" they really are. Naturally, Boston is incredibly inferior to New York.
