I don't think I've ever heard anyone before now make the argument that Chicago doesn't have anything unique to offer. It's an amazing, world-class city that is definitely a contender.

I doubt you're going to have trouble convincing 50,000 people to move to Chicago.

There's probably a pool of talent there already. Chicago to me is a no brainer.

You're forgetting that Amazon has to convince 50k people to move and work in Chicago.

So while crime is generally localized, it does taint the city's image making it difficult for amazon to sell. Illinois political stability is not exactly confidence inducing either.
As others noted .... American corporate relocations. Still have Chicago as the top city vs runner up Houston by double in Corporate relocations.

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/ch...cation-target/

From the article on the choice of Chicago for the 5th year by "Site Selection".

- Published in Atlanta. It tracks headquarters, manufacturing plants and logistics sites, among other things. In order to be considered, new facilities and expansions must meet at least one of three criteria: capital investment of at least $1 million; creation of at least 20 new jobs, or at least 20,000 square feet of new floor area.

- Chicago claimed the top spot in the rankings was based on “77 distinct city neighborhoods in various phases of realizing their potential, 275 municipalities and seven counties comprising the new Chicago Regional Growth Corporation, 10 viable candidate sites for Amazon HQ2 or any other corporate campus, impressive transit-oriented, mixed-use redevelopment and — perhaps best of all — housing stock that people can actually afford,” Adam Bruns, managing editor of Site Selection, said in a press release.

Every American city has issues. Most Canadians boast... though subdue it as not to cause argument. That their cities are besting US cities in issues you interject.

But still one of these US cities will likely win for reasons given as in a era of trying to keep what we can in the US .... and not move abroad. Even to Canada. Has nothing to do with not liking Canada or even seen in any negative terms unless someone cries about winters. I write off political extremist crying socialistic too.

As I said before .... Chicago is like a "tale of two cities". Any American Corporation knows this. But you still won't see anything like LA's Skid Row in Chicago. The city would clearly NEVER let piles of trash stack up for blocks. Chicago spent much to clear out its most blighted areas in them neighborhoods and tore down their failed notorious high-rise Housing Projects. To let blocks like Skid Row to happen. ** Not to diss LA ... just so much other then Skid Row there too. But it still is a example.

Yep. Every city has crime, even Atlanta.

It’s interesting to read what people think amazon really wants even when amazon has essentially stated otherwise. I sometimes wonder if people are conflating what makes sense to them with what amazon prefers. For example, like you say amazon hasn’t listed time zone as a criteria and in fact have selected finalists from every time zone. Now it could mean that amazon prefers the east but will consider other areas. I can see that, but they’ve really not given any indication that’s the case. Personally I have no idea why a company would want a second headquarters, nor have any idea whether they would want to be in the same time zone or not. I can see where both being in the same time zone makes a lot of sense. I can also see where having them in separate countries, 8 time zones apart might also make sense.

In some ways amazon has been very explicit regarding what they want, but then again their stated preferences fit most major cities, so they really haven’t provided much information.

I believe it's all about them having issues attracting additional people to Seattle, particularly in the numbers that they're talking about to fuel their massive growth.

Seattle is quickly becoming the Bay Area 2.0, and it's seen as a hindrance to bringing new people in.

Obviously just your opinion Mr. Burns from Toronto. You are one of the posters who really hate Chicago for whatever reason. Trust me, if Amazon moved to Chicago, there would be no problem attracting talent, as Chicago has been the top corporate draw for 5 years.

They have no issues attracting talent to Seattle. They turn down a lot of applicants per job. This is them wanting to impact another city.
