I wouldn't say MD and DE are purely Southern or purely Northeastern. I think they represent the dynamics of the country. I think in some cases, present day state borders are outdated. And for side commentary, the South is no longer a backwoods, rural, ignorant, and racist area anymore but has the ammenities present in the Northeast and elsewhere in the country.
I'm not sure most people outside of Delaware even appreciate the actual existance of this little republic, so they could hardly hate it. A friend of mine in Texas actually said that she never thought of people really living here -- it was just an address that credit card statements came from. She's pretty blunt -- she wasn't being sarcastic or ironic. She honestly had an image of DE as some place that just had banks and credit card services. But people, DE is a mostly rural place with a substantial Amish farming community, as well as great beaches, beach towns, tax-free shopping (no sales tax here), a first rate university in the University of Delaware, a small area of incredibly pretty Appalachian Piedmont in the north bit of the state, and a lot of amenities combined with a good deal of folksiness in the cities of northern DE. And it's nothing like MD inside the Beltway!
I actually wore my Yankee hat because it matched with what I had on and I liked it. Not because I wanted to look cool. I also have a Dodger fitted, a white sox fitted, a ranger fitted, and a braves fitted. I'm getting a blue Jays fitted tomorrow.

Since the Mason-Dixon line was the border between the Penn holdings (i.e., PA and DE) and the Calvert holdings (i.e, MD), Delaware is both north and east of it. Parts of rural southern NJ also have a Southern feel to them.
