Quite possibly, the fact that the rich pay such a high % of the taxes might be. They are the ones who create jobs for the poor and the middle class via business ownership. The more taxes they pay, the fewer jobs they create.

But the fundamental reason why we have 9.7% unemployment is because banks went crazy with the lending and people were waaaay too keen on taking the bait. That had to end at some point. And it did. With a loud thud and double digit unemployment.

What we're going through is a nasty recession, not a depression. The fact that people think we're in a depression is an insult to the people who actually lived through the Great Depression. Our 10% unemployment does not compare to the 25% unemployment they had at that time....And I don't want to hear from anyone saying the true unemployment rate is higher than 10%. The true unemployment rate during the GD was higher than 25%, too, so that argument doesn't wash.

Bingo! And yet there are plenty of people on the CD boards who complain about the world being overpopulated. They don't know what the h*ll they're talking about on so many levels.

The worst part about this is we had YEARS to plan for this at the individual and government levels, but people & the government buried their heads in the sand instead.

Well that's no fun.
But it is, you fund others, then others fund you. It is a tax when you pay it and a freebie when you receive it.

Good thought

To answer your question.....it's because they think theyknow. And demonizing the rich (or poor) absolves them from taking any responsibility to make things better for themselves (if you're poor) or for others (if you're rich).

the way unemployment is calculated now is different, if they used our way the depression rate would have been much lower.

Boompa, your hyperbole is tiresome. With the exception of a very tiny elite, the rich have taken a weath hit in the last decade.

Nasty recession = depression. Just because it's not as bad as the 30s doesn't change that.

Something is not free when you have to pay for it in one way or the other. Again comparing SS to welfare is a joke. We're going in circles; agree to disagree.

OMG!! Now you want to demonize the pro-choice people!!! What about just couples using birth control and choosing not to conceive at all? I've never had any children, and certainly no abortions.

And how would we be dealing with our current recession and 10% unemployment if we had even more people in the workplace? Obviously, if we had more potential wage-earners right now, the unemployment rate would be much higher in the US...

mysticaltiger, the real unemployment rate is way over 10%. it is somewhere near 20% and could get worse very soon.
