Every where i look, people seem to drive pick up trucks. Ive used them over the years, hard on gas and terrible in the snow. Wouldn't we save a lot of oil and clean up the air a bunch,if trucks were all considered commercial vehicles? To discourage their use. And either have diesel engines or run on Natural gas,set up,right from the manufacturer.
Using synthetic oil and limiting the amount of oil changes to twice a year.(i feel this is very easy and doable) The addition of a bypass filter would help this.
Offer tax incentives to people. So they would relocate closer to where they work. Sure is easier on a person if their commute is only a few miles.

We should also outlaw boats, auto racing, sports cars, personal aircraft, etc... Eliminate cruise ships too. Those ships burn an astronomical amount of fuel. Here are stats on the MS Oasis of the Seas (granted it's a large ship):

The ship's power comes from six medium speed marine diesel generating sets: three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 16V46D common rail engines producing 18,860 kilowatts (25,290 hp) each and three similar 12-cylinder Wärtsilä 12V46 engines producing 13,860 kilowatts (18,590 hp) each. The fuel consumption of the main engines at full power is 1,377 US gallons (5,210 l; 1,147 imp gal) of fuel oil per engine per hour for the 16-cylinder engines and 1,033 US gallons (3,910 l; 860 imp gal) per engine per hour for the 12-cylinder engines.

3 x 1,377 per hour + 3 x 1,033 per hour = 7,230 gal PER HOUR. One hour of run time at full throttle use is equivalent to around 110k miles of driving for me. Right now that equates to around 10 years of driving.

I like the live closer to work part and I agree with that. I don't see the US putting an incentive on that. There already is - less fuel use.

I like bypass filtering and testing the oil at set intervals before changing it out, but until it doesn't void my factory warranty I won't do it. I would LOVE for the dealer to put one of those in and make the filter changes as easy are those systems are too! And make the filters the insert type and not the metal cartridge type too. There is a lot of waste in the metal cartridges. All of the diesel trucks I have seen use the typical metal jacketed oil filter where you throw out of the whole filter rather than just replace an insert.

4 wheel drive and put some weight in the back, there isn't anyone going where you can go especially with chains on. That said you would only need the truck in really snowy conditions where you need clearance.

I don't know how it is in the rest of the country but in PA whether it's personal or commercial the registration is based on weight. I pay more for my truck but I can also legally carry and tow more. Soccer mom doesn't need a giant SUV but there is huge amount of people out there that need trucks.

OP has a brilliant idea...

So now when we go to Lowe's, Builders Square, plant nursery, take stuff to the dump or help the kids/parents move we would have to rent a truck...

Absolutely brilliant...

Oh come on, everyone knows you can load up a Priius and haul at least 150 pounds of stuff, then if you're slightly better off, I'm sure someone is using a Tesla to tow something.

There's a store I haven't heard in a long time. I thought all the builder's squares were long gone. Home Depot's and Lowes have taken over here.

And I wasn't gonna get into the fact that I can take my truck in more places than almost any car could hope to go through - and that is stock to stock comparison... I saw a Camaro jacked up on 44" tires... I am sure that could go through more stuff than my stock F350 4x4 could... I am also sure I get better MPG than it does too.

Obviously the OP has never owned one.

And I pay more because of the class of vehicle it is too - about double what we pay for the car.

Obviously you don't drive any long distances, either that or you don't own a car at all -or- you expect the same entity that will supply the housing subsidies to pay for the installation of an oil bypass system...

And just where is this additional housing going to come from? I guess once you get out of college and get a job you'll find out what the housing market is like...

So I take it you don't mind subsidizing other people's housing?

The average cost of an apartment in NYC is now $3,817.00 per month...

Why not remove from the highways the estimated 25% of drivers that have no liability insurance? Some of them even drive pickup trucks.

I've never had much trouble transporting things from a home improvement store in my sedan. The one time in I needed something really large that would not fit in my car, I rented one of their trucks for an hour. That being said, it's no skin off my nose if you want to own a pick-up truck. Be my guest.

You'd be that guy with plywood and 2*4's strapped to their roof endangering everyone?

Everyone's needs do not fit into a small narrow box that are your own. I'm getting ready to put in a small sidewalk, no sense calling a concrete truck because it's very doable with my small concrete mixer and a load or two of gravel and sand from the quarry that I'll get with the pickup. Are you going to stack a few hundred pounds in your sedan and make many trips to do that?

I know what you're going to do, you're going to call someone and hopefully find someone to take on a small job. You'll pay an outrageous price for potentially sub standard work. I don;t have to do that because I have a truck. It's what makes the world go round and just becsue soccer mom is driving some giant vehicle doesn't mean I should be penalized for it.
