There was always a Dead Zone off the Delta. They don't call it The Big Muddy for nothing. It's just bigger now due to faster flow of river.

https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2006/3005/fs-2006-3005.pdf Check out Fig. 4 --GC1 core data- the one that goes back 150 yrs-- the proxy oxygen data shows low levels back then. They rose for the next 100 yrs before falling again. Why was low O due to natural causes then, but must be man-made chemicals now?...I submit it's the dredging activity increased since 1950. Land Loss in the Mississippi River Delta
There was agricultural runoff in 1869.

Hypoxic zones are areas in the ocean of such low oxygen concentration that animal life suffocates and dies, and as a result are sometimes called "dead zones." One of the largest dead zones forms in the Gulf of Mexico every spring. Each spring as farmers fertilize their lands preparing for crop season, rain washes fertilizer off the land and into streams and rivers.

Hypoxic zones can occur naturally, but scientists are concerned about the areas created or enhanced by human activity. There are many physical, chemical, and biological factors that combine to create dead zones, but nutrient pollution is the primary cause of those zones created by humans. Excess nutrients that run off land or are piped as wastewater into rivers and coasts can stimulate an overgrowth of algae, which then sinks and decomposes in the water. The decomposition process consumes oxygen and depletes the supply available to healthy marine life.

Dead zones occur in many areas of the country, particularly along the East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes, but there is no part of the country or the world that is immune. The second largest dead zone in the world is located in the U.S., in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

OK, then explain why oxygen levels rose in Gulf cores from 1850 to 1950 as the farming population in the drainage area skyrocketed and industrial use of mineral & artificial nitrogen fertilizers went from essentially zero to very high.

BTW- phosphates have been banned from laundry detergents for about 40 yrs now & phosphate fertilizer are banned in several upper MW states due to naturally high soil levels yet the Dead Zone continues to grow. I'd still go with dirt & light penetration rather than chemical pollution as the real culprit. (Nitrogenous run-off is only a local problem. NH3 is very volatile and out-gasses quickly. That's why use of manure only as a fertilizer is a losing proposition when it comes to maintaining high yields. Almost all N waste goes out in the urine, not the GI tract.

nope not changing my argument, civilisation will always fall its just a matter of when not if.
don't listen to "project fear" on Brexit, Britain will thrive outside of the constraints of the EU, Europe is failing and the UK has the 5th largest economy in the world.

Civivlization will always fail. There is a brave prediction. Here is another. The Sun will eventually fail. Neither in our lifetimes.

Brexit:. the UK is going to get hammered. Dumbest referendum on record. As to the mighty UK, you're smaller than California. You may end up smaller than Rhodes Island.

typical outsider attitude. your just stating an opinion without knowing all the facts. size has nothing to do with it, Hitler made that mistake too, Britain will survive, we always have before, its not WW2 its only the EU, most of our trade is outside Europe anyway.

Look at the data in the research paper, Aristotle...What data are you using to draw conclusions?

why do you think we are leaving???
people have eventually woken up and realised that the EU is more than just a trading organisation, they are bent on total domination. the end game is obliteration of nation states.

civilisation have always failed, from the dawn of time, do you think just because we have computers and machines and oil we are immune? we are far more at risk now than any of the civilisations that went before, why? because we have put ourselves into a position where 99% of the population couldn't survive without access to all these modern inventions.
anyone that just keeps repeating "it wont happen" wont stop it from happening.
