The City of Greenville does not need an increase in rinky-dink low rise buildings. It needs to be proactive in vertical growth by requiring a minimum height for new building construction.
As the redevelopment of Greenville County Square is a project of Greenville County, it should have input from and listen to the citizens of Greenville County.
The Libertarian in me thinks that if government can tell us, "you may not build a building unless it's tall enough to meet the taste of certain people", government has gotten too powerful.
Maybe government could instead focus on luring headquarters of corporations that will need enough office space to require a tall building.
I'm pretty underwhelmed with the design of this building. This is a unique property where there will really be one opportunity to get it right for the next 80 years or so. Once it's developed, we're stuck with it so I really hope they go back to the drawing board and come up with a more inspiring concept.
I think that since this property is currently owned by the government, it is probably appropriate to have more public input in the process that with a standard commercial property. They are using the profit from the project to build new government offices. Should be a win all around - new government offices and creation of a new tax base for the portion of the property that will become commercial.
I'll miss all of the extra free parking that currently exists at the site.

I don't understand why some people REALLY want tall buildings in Greenville?

From experience, public input just slows things down. You get too many opinions from folks that have agenda’s. It’s either my way or no way. It leaves too many unhappy with the final decision. That is why there are elected officials and assigned committees to make right choices. The public need to trust and accept those in charge are making the right decisions. Greenville is blessed with good forward decision makers.
At first glance a few days ago, I wasn't sure what to think. Then I did some reading about this group of developers and they are impressive. I think these conceptual drawings represent the basics of the plan. A major impact game changing building fronting the site and a building with height in the center. These guys know what they're doing.

Greenville County has the opportunity to bring something unique to the City of Greenville. I would hate to see it fail.
Will Greenville County have public input with the proposed renderings?
