I am assuming you meant J-A-P in the astrisked areas. LOL. I love it when my grandfather talks like that. "Had to clear them islands of the J-A-Ps before we could put landing strips down. Them sombitches were dug in like ticks." LMAO
Yup, didn't realize I couldn't say J-A-P. I'm Italian, wonder if I can say wop.
LOL you can't say volcanic ringdike as two words here either.
The not chambered for it thru me fer a loop, but that's pretty easy to do some times.
Not to sure I woukd like hunting with a Ak clone myself, but people do. The SKS seems to be a ok cheap sporter, with a more or less sporting gun profile.
I really don't care what others hunt with, but i would hate some one to tell me my hunting with a Brown Bess was the same as hunting with a AK.
I don't think bullets care what chambers and gun profiles (shapes) they come from, so long as they fit correctly.
I agree there are better hunting rnds than others and ball ammo on say deer might not be the best, but I am willing to be a donut, deer have been taken with mil ball ammo of all kinds before.
I have a bad time believing any thing will drop when I see how small the bullets are. (the part that flies) The Bess ball is 0.735" That is my idea of a bullet.
I have a bunch of more modern dust collectors, so don't anyone go 'off' on me.... LOL

I'm sure FMJ ball will kill a deer, but its not legal in most places I dont think. I know its not in CT & thought it was in NH as well but cant say for certain.
Thing that got me started on my mini rant was placing the 7.62X39 equal to the 30/30. Sure, in some aplications it might outshine it, but in most hunting scenerios IMO thats not the case. With my personal guns, while the pointy 7.62 might retain velocity further out than a 30/30 its not useful, due in large part to the SKS sights, but even scoped over 150 yards its a crap shoot trying to keep it inside 5 or 6 inches, I do better with its crude open sights at those distances as long as the lights right & I can see. My scoped 30/30 on the other hand I run out of range before I run out of acuracy. My club goes out to 200 yards.
As you said though I dont really care what someone uses, I just wouldn't be recomending a battle rifle as a starter hunting gun.
I don't see the 30-30 as a starter hunting rifle. It is a great brush gun, short to mid range gun.
My beef with the AK is based on media hype, calling it a Hi Power weapon when it is a short to mid range gun, with ballistic very similar to the 30-30. I own both.
I also own a .308 bolt gun and have owned 30-06 in a few styles bolt and semi auto, also a K-98 in 8mm which is close to the 30-06 ballisticly speaking with a slightly larger bullet diameter.
To me there is no way the 30-30 or 7.62x39 is a mid to long range weapon.
I agree with your points on the 120 grain bullet on the 39 case gaining some on the 30-30 but on the charts these are more similar than .308 / 7.62 x 51 Nato.
I think in NH we can use mil ball. All NH seems to care about is centerfire brass. I have not checked on the smaller than .233 since i never owned any. The .17's are a tad small IMO for deer, but I just don't know if NH has made any laws about them and deer.
For deer hunting in NH IMO the .223 rnds / 5.56 are too small as well.
With all that said, you won't catch me hunting deer with a AK clone either. I can legally, with the used of a 5 rnd mag, and I have a few 5 rnd mags, but won't hunt with one until after shtf..
And then I wouuld have to be hungery and wandering around with the AK for some other reason.
Most of my hunting for deer is done with single shot flint locks, during both black powder and regular rifle seasons. Seems to work ok.
Trouble with the 7.62X39 is it cannot drive an equal bullet nearly the same speed as a 30/30 can.
Generally you need a 120 grain bullet to get near 2300 fps. Also 99% of available ammo for it is not suitable for hunting and neither are the guns chambered for it. ........
How so? My mother used a Ruger mini-30 to hunt deer and following her death I've taken many, many whitetails with it. I really don't need that much gun but there is nothing unsuitable about it.

I'll add that the "crap shoot" comment is more a reflection on the abilities of the shooter than on most firearms. Most modern firearms will shoot well beyond the capabilities of the person behind the trigger, IMO. Of course most testosterone laden hunters are not willing to admit such truths. YMMV.
Battle rifles insult the "purist" in some hunters. However, if one is a capable shooter with them they are perfectly suited for hunting, possibly moresoe with the adjustable stocks. One gun for mutiple family members hunting together. A parent can carry the rifle and hunt with a child, use the same firearm, and just adjust the stock to fit in a click. To me this is a huge plus both in convenience and accuracy not to mention safety.

That's a scary thought! LOL
