Biggest Luxury: A paid off mortgage. No more payments for me! Ever!

Second biggest luxury: Lots of room. We have 4600 finished sq feet on a half acre lot that backs up to a 40 acre city park. We have protected views forever. No barking dogs from adjacent rear lots. We have an 18 by 21 foot family room with a whole wall for display of a giant flat screen TV. We have a huge kitchen with 36 cabinet drawers and a 7 X 6 foot center Island.

We're retired. Do I need all that room? No. But I love having it!

Hmm.. I guess it would be a toss up between my plaster walls and ceilings or the antique chestnut floors.

Ooh, chestnut - how neat! My house has antique heart pine floors, but they're not considered out of the ordinary where I live. Now chestnut - that would be exotic!

The lack of a mortgage on my very modest house.

The original artwork on my walls. (None of which is "name" artists, but I like it.)

The stacks and stacks of books in my shelves.

Oh, did I mention the lack of a mortgage?

Interesting seeing all the responses. I didn't think about my bed, but I got a relatively inexpensive memory foam mattress so while I love it, it didn't cross my mind as luxurious. But I think it fits the concept I was thinking of, which is taking something necessary (a shower, a mattress, etc) and putting more money than you technically *need* on it in order to get something that goes above and beyond mere necessity.

But no, a paid off mortgage is not a luxurious home decor or design item. It may be a good thing to have (although some people on other threads disagree and think you are better off investing that money in the stock market instead) but this is not that subforum.

Believe me, for some of us the luxury of not owing a dime to anyone in the world is the best house luxury there could be.

But, the money saved, by not having a mortgage, could be turned into a home design or décor item!
