My kitchen I remodeled in 2010 has an externally vented under cabinet range hood. I designed it so I could fit a large family heirloom Granite-Ware lobster/steamed clam steamer on the stovetop. The microwave is on the counter.
The microwave is a nothing special GE from 2010 that will probably out-last me.
I cook a lot and it’s a small house. I picked a range hood that can vent 330 CFM. I don’t think you can get an externally vented microwave that moves anything close to that amount of air.

There are a few manufacturers that have at least 300cfm…
So I'm not really loving our over the range microwave. I'd rather have a vent hood and shelf instead.
The problem is where to put a microwave.
The kitchen was remodeled by the previous owners and the cabinetry isn't inexpensive. Reconfiguring it to include either a microwave drawer or built in microwave isn't an option without remodeling the kitchen again, which is a waste of money because we like things as they are (except for the over range microwave)
Would removing the over the range and getting a freestanding micro be a turnoff for buyers down the line? Do buyers expect to have the microwaves built in?
For reference the price point of the home is in the 750-900k range.
Thanks,
I think newer homes no longer put the microwave over the stove. It is a horrible place for it. I just went on the annual tour of homes show that the local builders have every year. Not one microwave was over the stove. The current microwave trend is to have microwave drawers. I am not keen on those either.
My microwave is built into a wall cabinet. I like it that way. However, given the choice between a counter microwave or an over the stove - I would take one on the counter. I'd be afraid of catching my clothing on fire if I were cooking on the stove and using the microwave at the same time.
We have a built in microwave/convection oven over our built in wall oven. We also have a glass cook top. Love this set up.
In our former house, we had a built in microwave over our gas range with a vent to the outside. That worked fine, too.
We lived for a time with our microwave on the counter and that takes up a lot of space, especially in a small kitchen. It's so much better to have them built in and off the counter.
