I went to Strake for 3 years, and then left to finish at Spring Branch ISD (Stratford). IMO SJ is really, really not worth the money if you have a high performing public school option. The academics were no different than any high tier public school. Half of the classes were taught by coaches, just like public school. Most of my friends from both schools ended up at UT or A&M.

If you are into academics it's a no brainer. St. John's is a much better school. But don't send your kid there if he's not very smart. He will struggle.

Do you think Strake and St. Agnes should someday move to Sugar Land/Missouri City? Or do you think it should stay put in Chinatown?

I will add that Strake has a pretty strong alumni group for a high school. If your kid stays in Houston after college, that could be an advantage. My boss graduated from Strake and went on to Rice. The Strake alumni group seems to be stronger/closer knit than the Rice alumni group.

The average SAT for each graduating class is always a notch higher at St. John's, and you have a coed & secular vs. all-male & Catholic choice. Strake graduates a lot of kids who go on to A&M or UT and do very well in their professional lives. St. Johns sends a much higher percentage of their graduates to Ivy League schools. However, as a parent I would have MANY reservations about the secular, materialistic and left-leaning culture at St. Johns. Ultimately, you'll have to tour the school and decide where you and your child are most comfortable.

I think Strake / St. Agnes have a significant share of students from the west side, so such a move would risk losing them.

I don't know enough about the economics of a move like that to even begin having an opinion.

I always enjoyed sneaking off campus for lunch in Chinatown though; for $4 you could get plenty of food for two guys compared to the high prices at the SJ cafeteria. I imagine it would hurt a lot of the businesses in the area if Strake moved, especially High Times ...
