After Texas voters on Tuesday rejected a referendum that would have authorized up to $217 million in bonds to turn the Astrodome into a giant convention and event center, the stadium is likely to be demolished.

We can t allow the once-proud Astrodome to sit like a rusting ship in the middle of a parking lot. This was the best effort (to revamp the stadium), and voters have turned it down, said Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. Fifty-three percent voted against the amendment.

First, November's no vote on the bond issue did not automatically mean the Astrodome would be torn down. Emmett said that people tell him, " 'We voted to demolish the Dome.' No, you didn't."

Now that the Texas Historical Commission is considering designated the Dome as a State Antiquities Landmark, "we cannot go forward with any plan without the Historical Commission's sign off," Emmett, echoing the reporting from CultureMap's exclusive on April 29.

Turning to the various considerations, Emmett noted the County lacks the funds necessary to redevelop the Dome without a bond issue, and the private sector hasn't been helpful either. "We've had one private group after another come in . . . so far, no one has come in with money."

In the short term, nothing will happen to the Dome until the Historical Commission considers the SAL-application at a meeting on July 30. If that's approved, the Historical Commission will have the ability to weigh in on the Dome's future.

Even going by that logic (which is a fair point), that doesn't explain Emmett's consistent defunding of previous projects considering how long his tenure was. Nor was Harvey wasn't the first major flood in Harris County. And coming from a poster that has long shouted "the results matter regardless of the circumstances" route, I find it a bit weird that this time it's different.

Emmet was tied into the long time Republican thinking that poor people don't deserve County services, and that all projects must benefit the rich White folks on the West and Northwest sides of the County. Overall he did OK, but he was definitely biased. And, he should have just brought the bulldozers in and demolished the Dome.

At least be honest with yourself. Nobody voted FOR Lina Hidalgo…she was elected on the coattails of Beto O’Roark by straight party ticket voting which has since been disallowed.

Nobody even knew who Lina was before she was “elected.”

The Astrodome had nothing to do with the election results.

IIRC, there have been group after group and study after study regarding what to do with the Dome since I came back to Houston in 1998.

It's like nobody wants granny's stuff but it's too good to give it to the Goodwill so it sits.

I was shocked when she got elected. But, so far it appears her hand is not in some developer's pocket like some past commissioners. I have no quarrel with any previous Judge.
