What you need to know about Lina Hidalgo and Alex Mealer in the race for Harris County judge

[Mod edit: do not quote entire article]

Quote:
As Election Day nears, current Democratic Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Republican challenger Alexandra del Moral Mealer are bracing themselves for the final stretch of one of the most closely watched races in this election cycle.

With a population of more than 4.5 million, Harris County is the third largest county in the country. The Harris County Judge is the head of a five-person Commissioners Court that manages a multi-billion annual budget and is in charge of funding key services and infrastructure in the county.

While both highlight their Hispanic heritages, the two candidates come from sharply different backgrounds and have clashed on policy matters ranging from crime to abortion. Here is a breakdown of who they are and the key issues driving their campaigns.

Who is Lina Hidalgo?

Mealer is a moron if she thinks she can find $100 million in administrative staff cuts without decimating needed services the County provides.

Mealer, a 37-year-old combat veteran endorsed by Senator Ted Cruz, will face Hidalgo in November.
That's enough for me. And not in a good way.

Both highlight their Hispanic background?
The only one showing that as a qualification on her posters is Mealer
That automatically tells me that she’s not qualified

A lot of things show mealer as unqualified. The republican party could've done a much better job at trying to give Lina competition on this

Did you miss this quote in the article: Hidalgo, the 31-year-old Democratic candidate, was new to politics when she defeated Republican incumbent Ed Emmett in 2018 and became the current head of Harris County’s governing body.

Born in Colombia, Hidalgo moved to the Houston area with her family as a teenager. In 2013, she graduated from Stanford University with a political science bachelor’s degree – the same year that she became a U.S. citizen. She also obtained a joint advanced degree from Harvard and New York University.

Alexandra del Moral Mealer, 37, is a West Point graduate and former U.S. Army captain who had hundreds of soldiers under her command in Afghanistan in her 20s.

She joined the U.S. Military Academy at West Point following the 9/11 attacks and served in the Army bomb squad upon graduation. Later, after attending Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, she moved to Houston with her family

Yeah, I’m not a Ted Cruz fan. I almost feel like The Chronicle put that in there precisely due to the negative connotation. They could very well have put “endorsed by Mattress Mack” which has been a much more visible endorsement.

Having said that, endorsements have never influenced my vote for any candidate.

Default Latest poll numbers

Not sure how reliable these numbers are. In general, nationally, Democrats have been losing ground over the last month though.

Quote:
A new poll released by Defend Texas Liberty PAC shows Republican candidate Alex Mealer with a four-point lead over Democrat incumbent Lina Hidalgo in the contentious race for Harris County judge.
The poll, which surveyed nearly 1,000 likely election voters, has Mealer leading 48 percent to Hidalgo’s 44 percent.

Among the top issues defining the race in the state’s most populous county have been Hidalgo’s efforts on so-called “bail reform,” which have led to dangerous criminals being released into the streets. Fifty-three percent of those surveyed said they believed the reform was leading to higher crime, while only 19 percent disagreed.
Mealer has made the issue of public safety a centerpiece of her campaign, highlighting that Harris County’s total crime is up by 132 percent, with violent crime 224 percent above the national average.
Also, there seems to be quite a bit of drama going on at the Commissioner’s Court:

Harris County budget meeting ends after GOP members skip for third time, Hidalgo booed by crowd

11:06 a.m.: Law enforcement officers with Harris County constables offices lined the hallways and courtroom as Harris County Commissioners Court was set to start on Tuesday morning. For over a month, members of the court have been fighting over the county's proposed tax rate and budget for fiscal year 2023.

11:10 a.m. The meeting was set to start at 11 am. So far, no members of the five-person court are in their seats.

11:17 a.m.: Moments before the meeting was scheduled to start, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo's challenger in the November midterms, Alexandra del Moral Mealer, shared a Twitter post showing a slew of law enforcement outside the county courthouse. The meeting was set to start at 11 a.m.

11:28: The meeting is scheduled to go on now that Hidalgo has appeared. Dozens of people typically sign up to speak at Commissioners Court meetings, but today is unusual because several officials related to law enforcement have signed up to speak

12:14 p.m. Hidalgo ends the meeting early due to ongoing sickness. She temporarily left the campaign trail last week to recuperate from an emergency room visit.

The crowd started booing Hidalgo once she gaveled out.

Those Republican commissioners are being big cry babies about finding themselves in the minority, and have failed to show up for a vote, since they know they will lose. And now they're stirring up police to show up and intimidate Lina? That's just ugly.
