I think a lot of this has to do with language. There have been several cases of incompetent Russian translators causing serious havoc in the industry. It seems that native Russian speakers (62% of whom are light-skinned, and 57% of whom ALSO have blue eyes...and could pass for 'white capitalists' at first glance) have a difficult time distinguishing the subtleties of colloquial English....and when the Russian brides are entered into the catalogue, occasionally the publisher (usually based in some sweatshop in Vladivostok, with illegal North Koreans on the payroll) will print "MALE, OLDER, brides" (which, in ENGLISH, sounds pretty close to "MAIL order brides", but means something quite different)...And THAT, to many American 'grooms' would be regarded as a major deal-breaker.

Also, there are those who hear of "the Russian Mafia", and automatically rule out Russian brides, assuming they'll look like Tony Soprano in drag.

Still OTHERS fear a Russian woman MIGHT look like Rod Blagojevich, not realizing that Blagojevich isn't Russian, he's Serbian...and MIGHT pass for a Rumanian, if the light was dim enough.

The "bride" business is a tricky one...

What I don't get is why the anti illegals on here bother to argue with the pro illegal whinners about racism. When over 10% of the entire population of Meheko is in the US illegally, that's enough to chaffe anyone's ass. Any vitriol against these unvited illegals is fully justified.

I sense your frustration. I can't speak for the 'pro-illegals' myself, and have never really understood their side, except that there seems to be a feeling that "we're a rich country, and we can afford it".

Perhaps in reply to your statement that "10 % of Mexico is here" ( a fact in itself admittedly enough to chafe MANY people's posteriors), they might rebut you by saying, "yes...but in their defense, consider the fact that 90 % of them are still home".

Might not be much of a defense....but it might come up. It's as good as many I've heard.

It's not really in their defense, it's in our RELIEF. As in 'Thank God that 90% of the population of Meheko is so far still in Meheko'.

they would be slightly better off, but only b/c of their white skin and the preference that other whites would give them. I lived in west hollywood, calif for 8 years and witnessed the non-assimilation of the russian immigrants. They were just as welfare loving as any other immigrant class and were rude (their custom) also. They were always using food stamps and living in gov't housing. they also had "ethnic advocates" who helped them use their refugee status to qualify for all of the freebies that we taxpaying Americans are forced to pay for. god help us if they ever became a sizable minority in this country.

This kind of relates to what you said

Let me elaborate a little bit on the socioeconomic conditions of a few immigrant groups. Throughout my senior year, I worked as an immigrant interviewer at the Institute of the Social Science Research at UCLA. For nine months, I interviewed many immigrants living in the Los Angeles area regarding their socioeconomic status. I will start by discussing the immigrant population from the former Soviet Union.

Many of the immigrant families from the former Soviet Republics: Russia, Armenia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Uzbekistan, to name a few, are surviving blue-collar jobs, minimum wage, discrimination in the job market, language barriers and many other hardships. The overwhelming number of immigrants are heavily dependent on food stamps, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Medicaid programs. Most families residing in the “Russian town” of West Hollywood are crowded into small apartments and very few families can afford to buy a house.

Moreover, it is not a surprise to meet an immigrant who was a Ph.D. researcher in the former Soviet Union, and now mops a floor for a living. Most of the time, the foreign academic credentials the immigrants possess are not recognized here. Now, tell me this: how can you assume that my friend from the Ukraine, whose family survives on food stamps, and whose mother is unemployed because she has a hard time learning English is “privileged”? Who are you to say that, since she is white-skinned, her family didn’t experience severe economic hardships, and she must have had an easy get-in at UCLA?
The Daily Bruin - Editorial ignores UCLA’s socioeconomic diversity, immigrant students
