I'd prefer one or two casinos instead of tolls to produce city revenue.

I always wondered why I could never find a park on the street on the weekend, it was those damn tourists from Kansas.

I think we need to take a trip to NYC sometime....I assume you are speaking of Manhattan only. We will find lots of people....I can think of a hand full of places to go where every bar and restaurant are full. Each and every weekend. Numerous, numerous places through the city.

Jacksonville downtown is a ghost town on the weekends. NYC is not a ghost town by far. 8 million people. It is the most densely populated city in the US. One of the most densely populated in the world. Ghost town....never. I bet a lot of people that live there which it was a ghost town sometimes...so that they didn't have to deal with crowds of people everywhere they go anytime they go somewhere.

I think you need to visit Manhattan a little more. Take a train into the city from Jersey any weekend and the train will be full and when you get off the train you will be walking through massive crowds of people. And when you leave at night, it won't be as packed but the train will still be full at 3am. Ghost town?????????? Come on!!

If you think NYC is a ghost town, I don't know what you could call Jacksonville....what is more desolate than a ghost town?

vidcapio--the basic statement is that there is a seasonal migration pattern OUT of NYC on the weekends which I understand and witnessed firsthand. Manhattan "runs hard" from Mon-Fri so it is natural for most city places to take the weekend off. When I moved from Cali to NYC to work--I assumed the weekends would rock "even harder" then the midweek did. I found the opposite to be the case, that is all.

I am here to learn about Jacksonville, not debate NYC. I certainly don't want Jacksonville to become "miniManhattan" or something like that.

I would like to see positive economic and social growth in Jacksonville and FL, for that matter...

you really don't know too much about NYC, the only time the city really clears out is on summer weekends and even then there's still plenty to do. Most NYers do not hang out in midtown and downtown has gotten quite lively in recent years. What part of NYC are you from?

downtown is hardly a ghost town on weekends, I just wrote a whole report on my visit downtown this past sat. night, granted the action is limited to a couple of places and you could find more action on one block in nyc but there is some fun to be found downtown.

Thank you!!! Why do topics about Jax seem to always head towards "Jax vs NYC" comparisons??? In many of the Jax topics, I see ppl comparing it to NYC!!! Who cares?!? We dont want it to be like NYC!!! If it was like NYC, most ppl would leave!!!

Dude, the post was about miserable cities and NYC was on the list....then she made the comment on NYC being a ghost town.

Any comment about NyC being a ghost town deserves a response. She mentions ghost town, I think immediately of Jacksonville not NYC. That is why NYC came up.

We know you love Jacksonville and its gated communities, super sprawl, lack of culture, closes at 10 attitude, and fantastic weather. We know. Thanks for reminding us!

Ponte Vedra Beach Guy,

Yeah downtown has some spots.....Mark's, TSI, London Bridge, the Pearl. Yes, I have had fun downtown with friends at these places. But, technically you could go to all of them in one night....if you do the hop thing.

But as far as being a ghost town, I am sure that in your driving between spots on Saturday, you were one of few cars on the road. And when my friends and I walk from the Pearl at 2nd and Main to East Bay we don't pass a single person. It is just our group. The same can be said if we were to walk form London Bridge (Ocean and Adams?) to East Bay. We would be the only ones on the street. So, aside from the people clustered around the places on East Bay and at the Landing, the rest of downtown is what I would define as a ghost town. Completely empty.

So, I think the girl from Cali will definitely change her mind about NYC being a ghost town when she gets a glimpse of Jacksonville at night on the weekends.

But yes, you are right fun can be had in small pockets of downtown on the weekends.

If they ever get a grocery store and a few restaurants open past 3pm downtown the place will come to life.

I have never met anybody to find NYC to be boring...ever. I am afraid that if you find a NYC weekend to be boring, you are in for some serious, serious boredom in Jacksonville. I could write a book about the random things that happened to me and the people I met in NYC. There is always something crazy happening. Jacksonville is not even close to being a miniManhattan...I am not sure what you could call Jacksonville....but never would I call it a miniManhattan.
