1968 Ketchum 1323 TRUMAN RD Double checked this, misprinted address, you are correct, dmouse. I shift the blame to The Honorable Ralph Lane Polk (1849-1923), his Successors, and Assigns

1980 Ketchum 11911 US Hwy 40

Everyone was a bit surprised that they dissed Noland and went out to 40 by themselves!

BTW: Lets blame it on MAD, just for the fun of it!

Guilty! I edited the Polk's entry just before Dallas got to it.

MAD seldom gets anything wrong, so agree, let's spread The Pain

In spite of his Mea Culpa

It's the right thing to do

I have zero recollection of that so if one had asked me when was I 70 built I wouldn’t have known
MadMan, do you have a date for when I-70 opened for traffic at Noland Road or any other place in Independence? You didn't want an easy question, now did you?

Sorry it took a few minutes to untangle the answers from the cobwebs of my wetware. If'n my feeble memory is correct-

-West of Blue Ridge Mall to the Blue River opened in the summer or 1964.

-From Blue Ridge Blvd. to US 71 By-pass opened in the fall of 1964.

-The last section to open in western Missouri was from 71 By-pass to Grain Valley, which opened in late summer of 1965.

Thanks! That confirms my memory. I left Independence on January 2, 1964 for Fort Leonard Wood, I came home for a few days in March and then went to Fort Sill, OK. Came home in late June, spent a couple of days and then flew back East to visit Washington, DC, before catching a "luxury" liner from Brooklyn Naval Yards to Bremerhaven, DE. We departed on July 4, 1964.

And, then I came home in June 1966 on my way to California and Independence was almost unrecognizable when I was first back.

1964 Coles' City Directory lists only Cable and McIntosh on Noland

I suspect the completion of that portion of I-70 per MAD, is what triggered the relocations of the others.

11323 Truman Road Lloyd Ketcham Oldsmobile

810 W. Lexington Blue Valley Studebaker

907 W. Lexington Galen Boyer

210 W. Walnut Guy Hinkle

11008 Truman Road Martin Gerber Motors

Scattershooting on a rainy day (must needed):

By 64. Indep Dodge had moved into the old Cable location

The McIntosh location is listed as "vacant" By 68 it looks like BF Goodrich moved in

BV Studebaker may have move across Lexington at 815 By 68 there's no listing, only "no return'

Forkner Motors looks to be used cars. Still there by 68, in fact, my copious notes show at the same location way back in Dwight D's time, 1954

The old Galen Boyer site is also listed in 68 as "vacant" By then "Keith Owens" had moved over a salesman at GB

Similarly, "Gene Ellis" was in sales @ Browning and S. "Guy Hinkle" was Finance & Insurance Manager @ Wilmoth

Inexplicably, Jerry Hays Ford was not listed on Noland street directory in 1968, but is listed alphabetically @ 2860 Noland

But wait, there's more . . .

Something we discussed long ago has popped up again today while I was perusing an old Examiner.

December 10, 1946

Director of the Veterans Information Bureau Maynard Sands ex-officio landlord of the new GI village on U.S. Hwy 24 and River, said today he is feeling very good about the whole project now. After a great deal of delay the cook stoves have been supplied and the 24 apartments are all filled. Many of the tenants are working hard to improve the buildings. Playground facilities are important because at the present there are 43 children with two more expected momentarily in the village. Eleven of those children are now attending the Bryant School.

The original conversation can be found by going back to this post...
