Scoop, I love you man, but you're dead wrong on this one. We don't smoke, rarely gamble and are overwhelmed by the nightlife choices here! There are also a few fine pubs with very few (if any) video poker. You need to try some places out. Don't take my word for it.

I agree. I don't smoke or gamble and always find plenty to do! I try to avoid smoky-gambly places, even.

Our family was moving out of the the NE and looking for somewhere to move to. I read a lot of the comments on this forum. I read the negative comments but thought it can't be that bad...I mean I love vacationing in Las Vegas so its got to be great to live there. The first couple months were great overall...with exception of the non-stop money grab from every company you deal with, be prepared for deposits for everything. Also as mentioned be prepared for vehicle registration. So again the first couple months we explored the Strip and off-strip. We also explored much of the area including Red Rock, depending where you are from this might be impressive, having lived in many states with amazing outdoor scenery this was not impressive. After a couple months the Strip got old quick. Now nearly at 10 months after moving here and working here I'm burnt out.
These are not secrets that are sprung on you once you move here. We researched the hell out of Vegas before we moved here; taxes, shopping, schools, water, gas, trash, sewage (if a deposits is required they don’t hide it, it’s on their website) insurance, auto registration, healthcare, dental care, wages, movie theaters (my wife and son enjoy going to movies so this was important to them and she researched it and they don’t’ walk through a casino to see a movie) researched everything ad nauseam.

We took three scouting trips out here, stayed off strip, went into neighborhoods, spoke with residents (remember we didn’t know a soul when we moved here), peppered servers at off strip restaurants with questions etc. You know what everyone told us, we don't go to the strip unless we have guests in town, every single one, and they listed the reasons why they didn't and we listened. No illusions that we would be on vacation every day of our lives here and we enjoy vacationing here so living here must be grand.

Prior to moving here we knew there wasn’t a zoo, multiple theaters/opera/ballet, an aquarium, that it was hot here (it’s the desert, how is this somehow surprising to someone once they get here?), that there was gambling, casinos, people smoked here etc. No one hides this, it’s readily available information. Walk into Smith's and there are slot machines for Christ's sake, no one is hiding this.

I didn’t take the word of a bunch of people on a website and then act surprised when some of the people were a bit overzealous about their community and oversold it to me, or think hey I like vacationing there so it must be a great place to live.

How about some personal responsibility folks, do some of your own research, make some calls to see if a deposit is required and if it is and you have an issue with it don’t move there! No one hid that one from you, it’s on their website. Call the DMV and ask them what it will cost to register your car, call your insurance agent and see how much your automobile insurance will be, you can call the utility companies (used to be able to look it up on-line or through an automated phone system) and find out what the utility bill/usage was like at the property you're moving into prior to agreeing to rent or buy a place. All this information is readily available folks. Don't just talk the word of some yahoo's (myself included) on a website telling you they love living here and then be pissed when you don't.

Because you didn’t do your research and aren’t willing to take on some personal responsibility for your actions/choices the city and the people who enjoy living here don’t know what they’re talking about? That's ridiculous.

I implore anyone reading this post, do not take anyone on this websites word that this is a great or crappy place to live, do your own research, take a couple scouting trips, don’t vacation here and think it would be a great place to run to and leave your problems behind. It’s not, chances are if you have problems today you will have them here tomorrow, there’s no magic fix in Vegas. Personal responsibility folks.

One last thing, this statement

How do you know how much people are saving based on they came from? In my case what I’m saving in state income tax alone covers my entire mortgage. My property taxes are lower here, I make the same amount of money, gasoline is cheaper here, I pay maybe $100 more a month in the summer in cooling but I pay less in natural gas, cheaper flights, cheaper airport parking, I could go on and on. I’m very much ahead here in Vegas thank you very much. I researched this as well prior to moving here and STRONGLY encourage others to do the same.

i just said i wanted my husband to be closer to his family after 10+ years. That was also one of the reasons i moved here.

I can't rep you again, but this is a perfect post. Nothing about the Las Vegas valley should come as any surprise if you do any kind of due diligence. If it's not a better place FOR YOU than whence you came, don't move here. If it IS a better place FOR YOU than whence you came, come enjoy it.

100% on the mark! People who lack responsibility choose their own misery.

I don't think anyone is asking anyone else on this forum to take responsibility for them moving here and not liking it. Yes some people can't make numerous trips to visit here prior to moving here...so that is not always an option to all.

As now residents of Las Vegas we are giving our OPINIONS of how we feel about living here in Las Vegas. Everyone has a right to their opinion.

At the same time some things are not up for debate;
Nevada is #2 in highest gas prices in the continental US per AAA.
Nevada - Clark County School District is rated the worst school district based on size in the US.
Nevada - Is #8 on the current highest foreclosure list in the US per Bankrate.com
Nevada - Is #4 on the current highest unemployment rate in the US per CNN Money.
Nevada - Is #3 for the highest crime rate in the US per USA Today
Nevada - Highest divorce rate in the US, numerous sources.

So opinion is opinion but facts are facts.

I never said every year, I said the last 2 years.

It's not that I hate the city I was born and raised in; however, I was ready for a change and unlike you I did my research on several cities including Vegas KNOWING the deficiencies and spent considerable time out here prior to packing the stuff and moving. It has worked out fine for me but as I have said all these years, it is not for everyone and I have recommended that anyone spend at least a month here in the summer prior to moving here

The trouble here is that you're posting based on emotion versus facts, try being a little more objective..

OK, I'll bite. What would you suggest as an example of a fine pub in this town?

I think the facts I posted above are clear.
