and this is what the union is banking on - sigh...

and this is why competition benefits everyone - keep prices competitive, keep workers innovating, and keep workers motivated. No, it won't mean record-breaking profits for sitting on your hands.

why is it that we in NY seem to do things worse off than many other places with the same challenges (ie. public transportation)? Uhuh...

I agree with the previous poster who said there needs to be more than one railroad.

Ultimately I have to get to work so...

LIRR accommodated the NYC riders during the strike. NYC Transit should be more accommodating to LI riders.

The most expensive monthly ticket for Boston commuter rail is $362/month. That would be our Zone 10.........the ride is 2:25. 98 miles.

I really feel for you. I went through the strike in the late 70's Wound up carpooling into Manhattan, parking in our building..........and we never went back to the LIRR again. While we left the same time as we would have with the train.....we left work a little earlier carpooling.........and arrived home earlier than we would have by train........especially Friday nights when it seems nobody could throw a switch properly in the tunnel.

There is buses. Not that that will do anything really but we're not completely in the dust.

Yeah there is no way to bring the subway out here.

IMO, LIRR shouldnt have any stops in Qnz where the subway reaches, like Forest Hills. They have the subway and buses, they dont need LIRR too.

Wow,there is actually a test? The vast majority of it is a pure memorization that the average high school senior is capable of passing. There is a reason that working class people fall over themselves to get jobs like this....because it is one of the best gigs you can get with basically no education...and the reason it is such a good gig is because it's a captive rate payer paying the compensation, not because it's dangerous or requires any special talent.

It should be a good gig, not a great gig. We're paying too much for everything in this part of the country.

Chime in all you want LIRR worker/family member about what a special person it takes. It's not going to fly.

I suggested NYC transit to accommodate LIRR riders.....as in tons of more buses running from say...Citifield directly into manhattan.....or Nassau Coliseum directly into manhattan...or maybe we can be kids again & ride those yellow school buses to manhattan!
