Because NYS pays public service employees outrageous salaries and pensions which result in outrageous taxes.
Today three superintendents identified as receiving $300k pensions.p
I have answer make the school district responsible forever for these ridiculous compensation packages, perhaps then these Yes budget voters would see folly of their actions as well as stop nonsensical bonds
Having so many small districts, villages, and other tiny fiefdoms may be more the culprit

Sacrilege! Heathen!
LI is utopia, the greatest place on Earth.
Biblical beaches and heavenly bagels.
There is no other spot of dirt in the US that can hold a candle to the epic greatness of LI.
I bought into that for a long time. I lived in Long Beach for six years and the views were nice but I found that I preferred the boardwalk to the sand. Had a few great bagel places, but I prefer an egg sandwich on a roll.
Someone mentioned that New Yorkers are opening places in NC (and other areas) which is true. Some aren't up to our standards. But the best pizza, bagel place, and italian bakery we found close to our house are all NY-based and do live up to the hype. We weren't looking for the NY name, but they just happened to be in the area so we tried them and liked them.
I will say though, there is a lack of delis here on every corner, and that I do miss. But that wasn't going to keep us in NY.
Deli is the only thing no one seems able to replicate. The pizza bagels Chinese - gimme a break. And if that was really what keeps you in a certain place you have bigger issues than high taxes and crumbling infrastructure.
Beaches and bagels are just a copout for the people who are too chicken to move.
And speaking of chicken, there are no good authentic southern style fried chicken places on LI. Probably the reason many people wont move here from the south. No decent fried chicken or swamps.

What I don't really understand about the beaches part is that the ones on the north shore are rocky and really not appealing, and while the south shore has nice sandy beaches, many popular ones look like this on a nice summer day -
For those who go to south shore beaches, where are they less crowded and more relaxing?
We used to go to the Outer Beach off of Smith's Point years ago -- when I was called a (insert nasty term for lesbian) because I drove a truck. It was perfect then. Minimal vehicles, camp overnight, and the feeling that the beach was an exclusive little club. Almost 30 years later, everyone has an SUV and the mani-pedi yoga pants wearing mommas clutching Starbucks are out there with their spouses and spawn, bitching about crowds and the need for equipment to get a permit.

I tried Noshville when I was in Nashville. Using Hebrew National, they had a fried salami sandwich. It was incredibly awful. They promote Noshville as being an authentic New York Deli. They are not even close.

Even NYers can't make real deli work here. Deli isn't just food, it's atmosphere TBH. The few that have opened have quickly closed, it's an experience I really think can't be replicated.

My local bagel place duplicates the NY deli/diner type of atmosphere, the "B" department of health rating ("A" means you're trying too hard) but it lacks all the selection of meats, salads and cooked foods that you get at the deli.
It is a rare combination that works in NY. Whenever I go back I always make sure to get something from a deli and eat at a diner.
More lies charlatan!
Nothing can duplicate or mimic NY anything!
