Honestly, it seems like you can afford to live in the city and everything that goes along with it (potential private school, 4% city tax, etc.). That said, maybe you should stay there for the time being. Suburban life is a completely different lifestyle.
I don't know about the LIRR, but in Westchester, there are almost no express trains right now due to COVID-19. This adds about 20 minutes each way to my potential commute.
Plus, now it's a bull market for suburban real estate near NYC. Everyone is trying to leave the city and rates are low so there are bidding wars everywhere.
and SIB - i hope you are right! have you done the manhasset commute before? hoping we can spin the LIRR time as time for 'self-care' like 'meditating' or doing something beneficial for body.........most likely he'll just be checking his phone like a rabid hound.
I know 35 lirr sounds like a piece of cake to some of you...but we're quite particular about 'life optimization' ..lol. and every minute counts as it all adds up.
I commuted via LIRR to western Nassau for several years...it was about 55 mins door-to-door. I used the time to read and/or catch up on sleep. At the time I had young children and I still made the time to exercise.
@ SIB I believe that in order to take care of someone else, and to do it well, you have to take care of yourself first. If one or both parents' health deteriorates then you can be sure a child won't be getting optimal quality of care.
that's quite the reductive view of things. Of course when children are involved, things are a little more nuanced. The life of a child growing up in a Manhattan apartment is MUCH different than a leafy suburb with a yard where they can bike to their friends. And that's without even getting into the difference in Manhasset schools vs. the DOE. Not saying one is better than the other, but there are massive differences...differences that for most reasonable people are more impactful on quality of life than an extra 30 mins of sleep.
Everyone has a different tolerance for a 35 min commute and what i'm trying to say, without wanting to type a novel about it over the internet, is that we are particularly skeptical/anxious about it.
I grew up in a red state where a 20 min commute (by car) is considered "long." I personally would not accept a car commute over 25 minutes, but a train commute around 35 minutes is different. You're not navigating traffic; you just sit down or at worst stand up for half an hour-ish.
What threads am I reading today? First Asian bashin for cutting trees. Now fat shaming. Damn you all. Maybe let’s just stick with the Asian bashing. If you move to manhasset, you gotta deal with all the Asians getting on the train in queens. Don’t do it. Those inconsiderate Asian folks will make you eat their oily food and become fat. Not to mention having them sit next to you on the train and taking away your personal space. I see a mental break down happening really quick for the hubby.

Yeah, but at least their food is good. I can't get decent Chinese food where I moved to.

But at least with Asians they won’t take up much space. They take up like at most 1/2 a seat on the Lirr. With the fatsos, now that’s a different story. They will take up their seat, my seat, heck, the entire row. And god forbid when one of them let’s it rip.....you gotta pray you’re on the express because those train windows don’t open.
You scare me a little. I hope your neighbors will be thin enough.
I say let her go, in fact encourage her. She will sink a ton of money into Manhasset and once she attempts to "fit it" with the locals, that attitude will sink her and her snowflake hub fast.
I must say I wish we could hear from hubs himself....have to wonder if this is all in her head or not.
