Atantis Marine World (aquarium in Riverhead) very nice especially for toddlers, the Holtsville Park is nice too and the price is right (free),in Oakdale there is a beach south of Montauk Hwy close to Idle Hour dr has a nice park and pool and ducks that can be fed. Walks in Port Jefferson by the harbor (ice cream shop, candy store-the frigate) and just visually very nice.
Museums, parks, classes, whatever...just looking to see what Long Island has to offer for moms with kids that aren't yet school-age!
Are you looking for things to do on a weekly basis (you mentioned classes), or one-day events? People seem to be mentioning good one-time stuff, but there is plenty to keep you busy all summer as well. Where do you live? There are swimmng lessons - you can check w/your Town Recreation Dept to see any offered at your Town beaches, or there is Safety Swim in indoor pools, and I'm sure others. My son (not yet two) ADORES Music Together classes; we've been going weekly for nearly a year. There are Gymboree and other gym-like classes. Many local beaches, and parks, have playground equipment. State parks (again I dk where you are) have all sorts of things from playgrounds to walking or biking trails. Libraries have children's groups and regular events, both for reading and socializing. Your immediate area likely has a mom's group that gets together regularly.
And there are so many museums, attractions, and local festivals but I don't have a clear idea of how far you want to travel, where you're starting from or how often you want to go. How old is your child exactly?
White Post Farm in Melville is amazing! They even have an indoor petting area in the winter, but late spring to fall is incredible since they have a petting zoo, play area, train ride and pony rides. Pricey...but worth it.
Orly's Treehouse has an indoor play area. It's located in Westbury. You can bring the kids there to play or sign up for classes. Both of the places I mentioned have websites.
