I would check crime statistics and demographic info and also tour the area firsthand. Of course, it's not all bad--there are residents who've posted here who have good things to say. As for its designation of "hood" it has its elements, but it ain't nothing compared to REAL hoods.

I'm not trying to be all negative PR, I swear, but I really did see this on the news today:

Mastic woman found fatally stabbed in home
(10/16/09) MASTIC - A 25-year-old Mastic woman was found stabbed to death in her apartment Friday and police say her body may have been there for several days.
Police say Laura Pizzini’s body was found by a relative going to her Neptune Avenue apartment to check on her. According to authorities, Pizzini worked at a local florist and lived in the apartment alone.
There were no signs of forced entry, according to police.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
