I may be too late, but I would say 405 North to Hawthorne Blvd, then all the way to RPV.

Or you can take a more ghetto route and take 405 N to 110 S and take PCH to RPV.

You'd recommend driving all the way north to Lawndale and then cut back south through all the billions of lights on Hawthorne Blvd?

What he said, or...

I took some relatives down to Newport for whale watching last year and took PCH all the way down and back, mid-day. It was quite nice actually.

if you would like to enjoy that coastal city theme take PCH all the way to Long Beach. in Belomont shore (long Beach) you will do a left on 2nd street, drive until 2nd street hits livingston st. then turn left on livingston, keep going straight on livingston it will turn into ocean blvd, stay on ocean blvd until you cross Downtown Long Beach, keep straight on Ocean blvd and then it will convert to the 710 Fwy, stay on go straight, you will pass the gerald desmond bridge, and the vincent thomas bridge then, you will exit on harbor blvd, in san pedro. from there make a right on harbor keep going until you come to 6th street, do a turnright on 6th, keep going until you reach pacific avenue then doa left on pacific, next you will reach 19th street and turn right on it until you reach western then do aleft on western, drive until you reach palas verdes drive and you have reached palos verdes.
