When I moved into my hollywood place it was an old building..but it was nice because it had new laminate floors ,a new stove and stuff..and the rent was cheap like $1100 for a 1 bedroom.

I only lived there a year though.
The building was mostly filled with retired eastern european/russian immigrants.
One lady didn't even know realize I didn't speak Russian until the day I moved out.
She decided to make conversation with me for the first time in a whole year when I was trying to get a refrigerator down the stairs!...perfect timing!

Toluca Lake is really nice...it looks like there's a lot of new stuff that has opened up on Riverside drive too.
You're also not far from Hollywood and other areas if you want more action too.
Lot's of places opening in Sherman Oaks/ Studio city on Ventura blvd too.
Nice to see ...as there were always different restaurants there but they weren't that interesting really.
Yeah I am excited. I'm gonna plan the whole year to make the move. It's a small place my friend referred me to. That's one good thing about LA is you can find nice deals. No gym, no pool, no biz computer room but eh, I get a one bedroom and I am in a better area.

And yes, everything is much older around here. I am used to a new developing city where the older but nicer places would be seen as no-go zones for the upwardly mobile. Now I go back to Houston and look at older places and I am like wow that's nice, while my friends are like, dude, what the hell? Newly minted developing cities in the South spoil the hell out of people.

I'm going to Toluca lake. I found a nice place, older but nicer next to all the nice spots for 200 cheaper.
Just so I understand what you're sayin - Apartment management upped your rent 45 days before your lease expired but also said they are going to put in some new appliances/cosmetic upgrades?

And you have to pay the new rent, with or without the upgrades?

One other question, was the increase more than 10% of your current rent?

No they're renovating the whole place. They have new upgrades and they offered me a new unit upstairs, or keep my old place downstairs are charge me the full price of new renovated apt. They also gave me a six month option for either. I said I'll take the new one but with a year lease cus I wasn't gonna be happy with another increase six months later.

And yes they told me all this 45 days before the move. I had to go to them and ask, yo where's my new renewal? I went from paying 1050 to 1400 a month.

Well I believe they have you over a barrel if you were previously on a fixed term lease and it expired. If they wanted to they could just choose not to renew your lease, do the new upgrades and then rent it out at $1400 to somebody else.

I believe CALGUY is the person who is the landlord tenant law expert so you could try and message him for advice.

Guilty. Although I did summon the courage to buy the ticket last summer, but by doing so, I threw a few hundred dollars down the drain due to getting cold feet (for a few reasons). Now that I have a spot in which I could stay in Brentwood (well-off cousin, married into money), close to re-pulling the trigger....

Once you get there, don't expect your cousin would hold you forever, be very-very active looking for the job. Even the closest relatives (short of parents) wouldn't want to see you more than a month (or two).
